After over a year-long wait, Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment has finally announced a June 3rd arrival for a new three-disc special edition of Ridley Scott's acclaimed war epic Black Hawk Down. This one comes fully loaded with a 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer and English, French and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 surround tracks (no DTS option is provided), plus tons of extras. Disc one sports three audio Mark Bowden and screenwriter Ken Nolan, and a third track with various U.S. Special Forces veterans. Disc two includes the documentary "The Essence of Combat: Making Black Hawk Down in six parts ("Getting It Right," "Crash Course," "Battlefield: Morocco," "Hymn to the Fallen," "Digital Warriors" and "After Action Report"), 8 Deleted and Alternate Scenes with optional commentary, a production design archive, storyboards with commentary, "Ridleygrams" also with commentary, an Opening Title exploration, more still galleries, and Bruckheimer’s own Black Hawk Down Photo Album. Disc three throws in even more: "The History Channel Presents: The True Story of Black Hawk Down" and "PBS Presents: Frontline: Ambush in Mogadishu" TV specials, an Interactive Mission Map/Timeline, "Target Building Insertion" multi-angle sequence with optional commentary, BAFTA Q&A sessions with Scott, Bruckheimer and actors Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor, Jason Isaac, Mark Bowden and Tom Matthews, a Editor's Guild tribute to Pietro Scalia, an American Cinematheque Q&A with Bruckheimer and Scott, the “Gortoz A Ran - J’Attends” music video, a theatrical poster gallery, and theatrical trailers. Yikes! Retail for this puppy retails for $39.95.

Hmmm? whats up with that? pricey, no DTS soundtrack. yeah lots of extras.. but why? I do like the movie a lot. but no DTS, i dont think i'll be buying it. Usally the DTS soundtrack is what gets me to buy some SE dvd's. or if it has been remastered, to clean up a bad transfer. otherwise, no way Jose.

No dts = no sale for me. I'm not about to drop $30+ on a bunch of extra's I'll most likely never watch.

Maybe a Superbit will hit us later this year.

Anyone able to explain the major differences between the DD and DTS formats? Or a site to read up on it? I need to go through my collection to see what i have, but am curious, since I've gotta upgrade my receiver soon.......

I was a bit disappointed as well. Sure a dts track would've been nice. I know the picture came from their hi-def trasfer so I probably couldn't ask for more on that.


For extras? I usually don't care for them but for this film I had to know more about this MODERN WAR MOVIE . If you ever read the book then you know how gruesome this battle was.

There were some new scenes in the movie that were never told in the book and it would be interesting to know about them. The tv documentaries, and special forces + MARK BOWDEN commentaries only complement the book.


If you're a fan of the novel then....

This is one disc where the extras do matter !

I'll buy it. The audio commentary by actual Rangers and Delta Operators should be very interesting.

Dolby Digital movies are recorded using different compression ratios depending on the source film and the company who is making the DVD transfer. A DD soundtrack recorded in its lowest compression ratio is equal to the highest quality DTS recordings. The soundtrack on the original BHD transfer sounds great (one of the best DD tranfers to date IMO), even though is it DD only. I think it is naive to pass up on a disc that potentially could sound just as good a a good DTS transfer. Don't be so quick to count DD out, look at SWE1&2. These are also great DD tranfers.

DTS is just a different format that uses less compression (most of the time). Both formats have the same max quality capabilites, the only difference being DTS uses a higher quality minimum, and thus always seems to sound better, but an equally recorded DD mix sounds just as good.

Too bad. A SE edition should include DTS. Is this movie a Columbia/Tristar film? If it is not, no Superbit will be coming.

If you buy a new receiver, be sure to get one that plays DTS and make sure your DVD player can play DTS. From the DVD's I have listened to, the DTS soundtrack has always sounded better than the DD. Pearl Harbor and Lord of the Rings are two outstanding examples.
