subwoofer help

Hi, I have the Tsi500 and I am looking for a good sub in the range of 500-600. I was trying to choose between the martin logan abyss and the avs123 MFW-15. Can anyone suggest which one is better or toher subs which can be better. The only thing about the MFW-15 is that they weigh about 120 lbs.

If you want a lighter smaller sub that hammers very hard then you should look at a Sunfire True Sub. They have been selling on Ebay in your price range.

In my 14x20 room my ML abyss IMO does a fantastic job with music and is plenty for HT.

This can not be stressed enough! The size of your room W x L x H + openings, and the subs intended use, HT/music/both are VERY important on selecting a sub that will please rather than disappoint you. Your budget should allow you to find something good for the average small to medium sized room. There are many good subs out there, when you determine what you need, all the mainstream manufactures have one that will do it. You then just need to find one that will do it in your price range. Don't forget used, but try to find one local as most are HEAVY and shipping can be a pain and add to the cost.

When you have the choices narrowed down a little research the companies to be sure you feel comfortable dealing with them.

If you are set on the ML or the MFW you mentioned in the OP then I would say go with the ML.

Besides the subs mentioned by others above, look at HSU, Elemental Designs, Outlaw Audio, to name a few.

Thanks for the replies. My room is about 15x25x15 and I will be using it for 30 % home theater and 70 % music . I am looking for a crispier accurate base rather than the boomy.

Boominess comes from a cabinet that is too small for the driver/amp, and also little lining and stuffing inside the cabinet.

Look for a sub with a larger cabinet; ported subs are also a good choice.

Id somewhat agree with Shicks as hes on the right track, the "boomy" type bass usually comes from subs that are on the rather 'weak' side, and are often enclosed in a large box to give you an artificial type bass which compensates for their lack of power.

Id say check out www.epiksubwoofers.com they have a wide variety there that'll certainly please. Svs have a very thunderous bass and are better recommended for HT, but the 'variable tuning' models (that let you seal a port or 2) give you slightly tighter/accurate bass for music. Go audition some subs, best thing to do imo and just let your ears be the judge.

The Sunfire is flat out devastating and you can that to the bank.

But (that word that always kicks us in the butt with this hobby) that room is huge:eek: That 15' ceiling is going to suck up a lot of output. You can give the ML a try and see if it performs satisfactory for you. If not at least you will have an idea what you need, and IMO I think you could resell the ML at less of a loss than the MFW.

I really have my doubts as to whether 1 or even 2 of the ML (which is a really nice sub) can get the job done in that room. You probably will need some of the sub manufacturers mentioned above or something more like this:

My room is worse abt 35x15x18 (vaulted ceiling starting at 12' on one end to ~18' on the other end). I had 2 fronts w/ built in SWs and it was not enuf to fill the room. Now I added one ML Dynamo which gave enuf Bass. Now running 3 SWs (2 Def Tech Mythos powering 250W each and ML with 200W).

Is everything pretty much close to your seating? That is another huge room (to me) makes for a very challanging job buying and setting things up.

Is that really getting it done, or just made it acceptable? I have heard good things about the SQ of the Mythos, and the Dynamo is again a good little performer but that is a huge room.....room.......room....ro:p

apphd, these are 13 - 15' away inline with the TV in the front stage.

Now just to give more details, I hear very good bass from kitchen, which is adjacent to my living room. With my current setup, I egt a good bass, but not boomy. Good enuf punch that I enjoy both music and Movies..
