I bought a couple of CD binders off of ebay a couple weeks ago. The auction stated shipping via Media Mail for 8.11. Well, the Post Office opened up the box to inspect it's contents and as it turns out these binders aren't qualified contents as Media Mail according to their rules. The lady that delivers our mail said the sender should have known this and I had to pay and additional 10.30 before she would release the box to me. I'm not too happy about this, but I don't know if I have a legitimate gripe either. Opinions?

If they are worth the money to you, pay for it. If not, let the Post Office dispose of them?
That sucks. Sorry.

I found this on the USPS site FAQ.
it is not specifically media but generally domestic mail
I highlighted the "gotcha" statements at the beginning.....
What happens to 'postage due' Domestic mail?
Throughout its journey mail may be periodically checked to ensure it has proper postage. If a mail piece does not have proper postage, it may be returned or delivered according to the following scenarios:
If the item is without postage, or it appears postage fell off, it is endorsed "Returned for Postage Mail" and sent to the return address on the mailpiece.
If the item is short paid, it will be delivered postage due and the letter carrier will endorse it to show the amount of the postage due.
The recipient must pay in cash for postage due mail before the mail is delivered.
Depending on location, letter carriers may or may not be able to collect Postage Due directly from a customer or a customer's mailbox; for further information on how to pay for the Postage Due, please contact your Local Post Office facility.
Rural carriers are not required to go to the door with a postage due letter. Policy stipulates that rural carriers go only as far as the mailbox and blow the horn. The recipient must come out to the mailbox to pay and receive the letter.
Note: If the short paid item cannot be delivered as addressed (including if the recipient refuses to pay for and accept it), it is endorsed "Returned for Additional Postage" and sent to the return address on the mailpiece.
If an item is returned because of no postage or insufficient postage and one of the following is the case:
No return address is shown
The delivery and return addresses are identical
The delivery and return addresses are different, but for the same person or organization, then the mailpiece is treated as dead mail. Please see: What happens to a piece of mail when it cannot be delivered or returned to sender?
Note: A returned shortpaid mailpiece can have the necessary additional postage affixed (leaving the "postage due" message intact) to the original piece and does not have to be placed in a new envelope or wrapper.

I would have had the USPS return them to the sender. Chances are the seller would have then charged you more postage, probably less than your mail carrier, and you would have had to wait a lot longer.
Media mail is tricky and if the USPS at any point in the transfer gets suspicious they can and will open something to make sure it fits "media mail" status.
As far as opening a dispute as JVC suggests...............there's nothing to dispute. If it's not media mail it can't be sent as media mail. Ultimately it's on the sender but since you paid and accepted the item(s) you're beef is with the seller.............good luck.
Sorry bud

you're beef is with the seller
This is how I see it and this is what our mail lady pointed out. The seller should have known this item wasn't media type mail. In all fairness, I didn't know either. I've chilled on it now, so just going to eat it and mark this up as a learning experience. I'll advise the seller and give them the benefit of the doubt. They may not have known either. Thanks B.

Like I said, I'm going to advise the seller. If it were me, I would, but if he doesn't, I'm not going to stress over a measley 10.30. Live and learn, still learning. ;)

Wow, I always wondered how they dealt with things like Media Mail, where you could mail pretty much anything and claim it is "Media." Fascinating.

Just got this response back from the seller:
Hi there!
Media mail is an option that we offer on a lot of our listings, but not all of them. The deal with media mail is that it's only supposed to be used for actual media, i.e. books, CDs, records, DVDs, etc. Since we're a "recordings & supplies" company, we're able to ship products out via media mail without the post office inspecting them (for the most part). We also include some form of media inside every package we send out via media mail in case they are inspected.
If a product is shipped media mail and it is inspected by the post office and deemed not to fall under the qualifications of media mail, then the recipient of the package will have to pay the upgrade fee to Parcel Post before the package can be delivered. That is a risk we must take in order to provide this service.
We are definitely very sorry about this! If you could send us over something showing the amount you had to pay we can definitely compensate you. If you can scan it or take a picture and email it to us, or fax it to us at 805-543-3938.
I'm very sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your help!

It would have been nice for them to post that on their site somewhere so buyers are aware in advance.
Atleast they were very articulate about the policy and their willingness to help.
