I know, these speakers probably arent enough to get most of you excited, but I am really enjoying them. They are really well built, and I like the look of the faux walnut finish cabinets. IMO they sound great, especially considering they are bookshelf speakers. Nice, clean bass and the sound is overall, much larger and open than what I would have guessed. Peace all.:D

I got really lucky and found a pair in almost perfect shape. The serial numbers are even in order! Well, enough to keep me happy for a while anyhow.
Sorry for the poor image quality, best I can do.

dthomps - Hey a Polk fan is a Polk fan :)

I like the older style Polk's. I wish I never sold my Monitor 10b's. I may try and find a set for another room in the house.

Keep jammin'!!!

My amp is a Proton av-445, which Russ tells me is actually an alright piece of gear. Who knew?
It will do just fine for now, but soon I hope to get something of my own since this is actually my dads receiver.
I wish I could justify a few more pairs of Vintage Polk's cause I would love a pair of SDA's, but between going hungry, and having my girlfriend pissed again I think I can wait a while :D

Tell your girlfriend that you are buying the speakers to support the economy, and if you don't continue, it will falter and have grave consequences for everyone..... ;)

If she believes that let me know, I would like her to talk to my WIFE! Just kidding...... :p

Hmmm...buying HT gear to support the economy...I just GOTTA convince my fiancee of that one and I'll be a set man. Good thinking! :p

I currently have the Monitor 10's series 2 up front for the HT.

Using the Monitor 5's S2 for a 2 channel setup with a Carver CM-1090 driving them, not bad IMO.

The Monitor 10 and 5 S2 are still doing their job after all these years
:)

I see the solution to your problem as 2 flowers....

1 flower for her, one speaker for you.....
1 flower for her, one speaker for you.....

Problem solved..... :D

I really like the monitor 5's, great quality and imaging. They sound better than all my speakers except ADS L620.
However, I disagree with build quality being great. The cabinets are made of not so great mdf and if you bump them even slightly, a chunk will fall off, specially on the corners.

To the contrary; the Monitor 5's are well respected around here. I see you have the Series 2 for the early 90's. Having a pair of 5A and 5B, I would live to get my ears on a pair to compare.

^^This might be too subtle

You all realize your responding to a post from 2003, right? On the other hand, I really love my Monitor 5 SIIs. They've served me faithfully since 1991 and have scaled up nicely as I've paired them with better amplification. Right now they are in my bedroom system powered by a NAD C720BEE reciever and I love listening to them.

Thanks!
George

Monitor 5As with the peerless tweeters are a very "sweet" sounding speaker. And they sound good with most sources of power. I currently run a pair off a cheap early '80s JVC Super A class receiver and they sound "fabulous"--much better than they should on that!

I also have a pair of ADS L520s in that room. And while the ADS have more detail and do a few things better, there are times when I just want to listen to the silky smoothness of the Monitors. I also have a pair of Monitor 10As (nice upgrade for more volume and bass) in the closet (for now).

Whip on some tunes and have fun!

I ran monitor 5jrs + in Turkey for a couple years, really liked them. They're output capability and general tone was surprising. I used them with a 215watt soundcraftsmen amp.

This is too funny... or something messed up in the thread list.
When I checked polk vintage forum page this morning, this thread was in the first page and replied without checking the date.
Weird... I had to go thousands of pages in the forum to go that back and reply.
Now answer how it showed up in 1st page in bold suggesting it's unread thread. hmm...
