I've hunted in some of the past years down here. You got a very, very long firearm season here in GA. Goes from next week (Oct 17) all the way until New Years Day! Tree stands are a must down here. Don't need much more than a 30/30 to take most shots you'll find in the N. GA woods.

Yes Ben I am. We have great hunting here in New Jersey. As you can imagine good hunting property is hard to find but can be done. Currently I have a few options I use regarding land and they all produce nice deer. We can use a crossbow this year I won't. I know we will see more wounded deer because we will have novice shooters with crossbows feeling they can try a shot outside the true limits of the crossbow and or their own ability. I have a beauty of a 12 point around my home all the time but he won't be harvested legally. Unfortunately some scumbag will poach him. If I were to poach a deer it would be a young doe thats great eating not a trophy buck.
You really should get back into hunting. For me hunting is almost as relaxing as listening to music. These days everyone seems like they can use some relaxation not that hunting is for everyone.
Shotguns with buckshot or rifle slugs in New Jersey only.

I'm in your shoes Ben, not that I have relocated, but just got too busy with work, got married, had a baby, etc. Could have squeezed some time in but if I can't spend the time scouting and target shooting, it just doesn't feel the same to rely 100% on luck. We all know even when you put your time in, to be successful still takes a little luck, I just do not want it to be all luck. But out of a job now so will have more time, not as much as you would think, as I am going to school and still job hunting, but enough to enjoy it.

Yeah, I used to hunt deer. I used to hunt turkey as well.
They must have a secret club or some shit because every time I'd go turkey hunting, there were a plethora of deer....not one turkey. I'll never forget the time I was deer hunting and I saw a band of turkey 21 strong meet at the water hole 30' in front of me. They stayed there for about a half an hour and I could swear that they were laughing at me.
That was the last time I hunted.

Nah, after about 4-5 years of this happening I decided that hunting was not a fun hobby. It became an expensive waste of time [for me]. Besides, wiping fox piss on you, waking up at 3:00am to freeze your ass off for hours on end is not my idea of a good time.
So now I'm into audio.

I am most likely going to be hunting with a crossbow. I agree about how many people think that they can handle longer ranges than compounds. A compound can go to about 70 yards with a good shooter, and a crossbow is pushing it at 50.

30 to 40 yards is about my max with a crossbow. at least that I'm confident enough to get a clean kill from my stand

+1 Always refreshing to see others that know and respect their ranges for clean humane shots. This is critical to keeping the sport alive.

I have hunted here in Iowa for the last 11 years and have yet to land a trophey but I would have to say that I have missed a couple of them. Two years ago I really messed up and had a huge 12 pointer about 50 yards away and I got the buck fever and moved too fast before he got behind a tree and I would be able to shoulder the gun with out him seeing it, I pulled the gun up and spooked him and he took off running and I took a couple shots as he was running though the trees and of course I believe he is still running. I guess thats just the way things go. I hope to have better luck this year as we hunt in one of the best counties in Iowa as far as big bucks go.

Just last weekend I was hunting mule deer and blacktails in the sage and pines of the eastern Washington hills. Didn't get any. It's buck only and 3 point minimum (that's counted on one side only for you easterners).
The best part of it is getting outdoors in the wide open spaces during the day and drinking scotch around a huge fire at night. Having a trailer to sleep in helps too!
Hunting is almost required in Wyoming. I took my 10 year old with me on an antelope hunt this year and we got a respectable buck. Some friends and I just got back from hunting deer and elk but the weather was too warm. (Great camping weather though!) I hope I'll have time to try again in November or December.

Granted that "MAYBE" the population should be "CONTROLLED"..... but that is a carry over to our species.

I find it funny how people think it's just dandy to raise an animal in bad conditions just for food. Also I think to many people are effected by the chemicals used in raising the food for slaughter. I won't eat veal. The thought of how it is raised disturbs me. I guess to some ignoramuses leading the food to slaughter is so much more sporting than letting them live out and the wild and harvesting a few here and there. Also if these people that think that way live in the country they should donate their homes, and property to the animals and move back into the city.
BTW SJ nice prong horn:)

That's right next to none yet they have very big mouths and like to insult and call names. Sorry you don't like being a "man" off yourself and feed yourself to say a mountain lion, or a bear. That is just not true! There are many documented cases of most spices of higher mammals killing for apparently no other reason then entertainment (sport).
I had been for a long time conflicted about taking part in hunting. But after reading Michael Pollan's "The omnivore's dilemma," affirmed the ritual I take part in. And for me, it is a ritual. I connect with my food in a way that someone who has never killed their own meal can understand, but should!
I for one don't hunt for "sport." I use as much of the animal as possible. I choose to only hunt with bow and muzzle loader/black powder (one shot). And I also choose to not hunt for trophies, letting the best of the stock breed on (this also fills our role in the food chain in culling the heard, as it would be).

Come on... Someone who eats meat and has never taken part in the steps that brought it to the table is so disconnected with what it is, cannot respect it... It is after all an animal... that was living. But it was brought to your table through the grotesque mechanism that is the modern food chain.

Dee is right. I mean there is no sport in hunting. You get out of your rusty truck with one head light and walk 10 feet off the road. You shoot the poor thing that just stands still just like every deer I have seen to let you get of a shot at it. Then it walks up to your truck jumps out of it's hide, and packages it for consumption. I guess living in DC has disconnected him from what reality is. Personally I have been buying less and less of any meat from the store with all the animal cruelty, hormones, genetic mutations, and injections of antibiotics has really lit the flame for me to get back into hunting. It has been over 10 years since I shot a deer.
BTW I never felt that hunting was a "sport". It in't a competition to me. Getting out in nature and providing clean food for my family has been very enjoyable to me.

Come on... Someone who eats meat and has never taken part in the steps that brought it to the table is so disconnected with what it is, cannot respect it... It is after all an animal... that was living. But it was brought to your table through the grotesque mechanism that is the modern food chain.

Your an idiot. How many times have you seen signs that encourage you not to feed wild animals?
Wildlife Fact Sheets
The Effects of Feeding Wildlife
Many people enjoy feeding wildlife because it allows them to have closer contact with these animals. Often, they think they are helping the animals to survive, especially in an urban environment. They could not be more incorrect. Wild animals that are in your neighborhood have survived because there is available food, water, and shelter. Most urban wildlife eat a variety of vegetation and small vertebrates (such as mice) which are plentiful even in the most settled residential neighborhoods. If an animal is in your neighborhood, you can rest assured that there is plenty of food available, or the animal would simply not be living there. For centuries, these animals have existed without our need to feed them. This is still the case. While feeding the animals can be fun for humans, it is usually detrimental for the animals, and will harm them more than it helps them. The following information will explain this more thoroughly:
Here is a link for you to get some education. I know you are trying to gel with your outdoor wildlife, but you are not doing them any favors.
http://www.paws.org/wildlife/resources/fact_sheets/feedingwildlife.php
Just google feeding wild animals. I am not going to waste my time trying to educate every putz on the internet.
Congrats:rolleyes:
BTW stay in the city. Too many yuppie morons are moving into the country ruining the habitat for animals, and then calling the police, or having a tizzy every time someone fires a shot:rolleyes:

dee, sorry for your pain hope it gets better soon. But this is the "Clubhouse" for areas of interests other than audio. You no longer care about or believe in hunting ok to each their own. But to come into a thread about deer hunting to make some of your comments, is kinda in bad taste IMO. I've grown up, and except for some time in the USAF have spent most of my life in the country. Growing up around farms we do have a different view. We see pets and livestock sometimes die at birth, get caught in flood waters, and even slaughtered for food. We are also if lucky enough to have good timing, there to help get them out of the life threatening situations when possible. We remove the road kill from in front of house because of the smell. Find the carcasses of the weak that did not make it through a tough winter. So basically we just learn that death is part of life. Cold but hard fact. We also learn that animals were put on earth for our use. Our eyes focus forward, we are predators.
As far as it being a sport, again I have to disagree IMHO. There is a certain amount of conditioning required to hunt and fish. Also eye and hand coordination to shoot/cast etc. There is the mental chess game of trying to out smart our competition. It sounds like you may have hunted at some time, so you must know it is not as easy as shooting urbanized coons on your porch. I also hunt with my camera during the off season as part of my scouting. The pure relaxing pleasure I get from trying to become one with nature and my surroundings, the smells, the beauty can not be replaced.
All my game is treated with respect with every effort made for a one shot clean humane end. Then enjoyed by me and my family at the dinner table and none of my "trophies" are adorned with hats and sunglasses like some side show freak. Talk about lack of respect........
Sportsman through the Pittman-Robertson Act of 1938 has raised over 5 billion dollars to be redirected to state wildlife programs that all, hunter and non hunter, can enjoy and benefit from.
I'll respect your choice to eat what you please and live as you please, but please afford me and others the same courtesy.

Hunting is not a sport. It's not about being macho or other nonsense. It's about understanding that you have to take life to continue your own. Even vegans have to do that (plants are living things too).
People eat their burgers and fried chicken and have no connection to the living being that died to feed them. That's disgusting in my mind. No respect for the life that sustains them.
I also read "The Omnivore's Dilemma" and it clearly spelled out that vegetarians use much more fossil fuels to support their "boutique" lifestyle. It is not a natural way to sustain yourself.

Again IMO hunting is most definitely a sport. Others may feel different, probably those that never did any real hunting. It's not football, soccer, racing or synchronized swimming. But it takes skills that require practice and honing, some become better at it than others, same as any other sport.

That is a little different, when you say yard I'm guessing you mean the typical wide open manicured yard. Thanks Tom,
Even when I did live in Wisconsin I didn't deer hunt there. I did spend some time pheasant hunting which was always great. Many of my salesmen hunted deer and I saw first hand all the heads, some beauties some not, on the walls and found the non-typical kind of screwy.
Thats a real nice offer but when I return to see my friends and business cohorts it will be when the weather is beautiful. The farthest north I'll get will probably be Minocqua. Friends own a beautiful spread on Lake Minocqua so a couple days there then back south to Wausau then Milwaukee area. So, no hunting, one 1911 for personal protection, plenty of Budweiser, no pictures :o
and a lot of cash, I learned long ago don't expect every business to accept American Express.
I miss your beautiful state and the wonderful people I made life long friends with.

My dad has been hunter as long as I can remember , hes 80 this year and still hunts. He has a 350 acre camp a few hours north of here. Growing up wild game was a staple in our house and as kids my brother and I used to go with dad. I never really took to hunting myself but liked the time I spent with my dad and brother. One of these years I should go on the deer hunt and just hang with them. My personal preference of wild game is moose meat. Nothing compares IMHO.

If Moose tastes better than Elk I'll have to try some. There are Moose not too far from here in New Hampshire. Rabbit is awesome too.
