omg omg this is so exciting. I've always wanted to hear planars. I've been delaying a pair of MMG purchase. By the time I was ready, my dealer got a used MG-1 in excellent condition. I called today asking about them and was told they were sold, BUT, he had a pair of MG-12. Got there late right when he was closing.

Didn't demo, I just bagged them. They're in mint condition.

This is my first hour with them. WOW!!! I'm flippin out! Sound is absolutely wonderful. I'm gonna be up all night listening.

What kind of toe in do you need for these? I have the tweeters on the outside. Are you suppose to aim the tweeters at the listening spot?

Congrats!! The sound of Maggies is a real pleasure to listen to. In my room I found that they sounded better being fairly towed in, but not as much as having the tweeters aiming to the sweet spot. Try different degrees and see how you like them.

Pics or this thread is useless lol.

Congrats on the score man, looks like Maggie fever has been going around. First x0 picks a pair up and soon afterward I got a pair.

Oh one other thing, I used Deoxit on the fuse-holder contacts and it did a WORLD OF A DIFFERENCE! I'm really digging my Maggies all over again, and with my sub placed next to them it's just a room full of beautiful music, LOUD music :D:D:D

Congrats! I love mine...

From the MG12 Manual:

SPEAKER PLACEMENT
Proper speaker placement and room acoustics can have more effect on a music system
than upgrading one of the components in the system. Unfortunately, there is
no definitive guideline which will cover all possible listening rooms. Some
experimentation is required for locating the optimum position. The following are a few
general guidelines:
A) BASS RESPON SE--Play a record (or test signal) with repetitive bass. Try the
speakers in several possible locations in the room. Begin moving the speakers
forward or backward in increments of 6 to 12 inches. One position in the room
should be noticeably better than others. Also experiment with your chair location.
Positions close to a wall will often result in increased bass (often too much). See
Figure 2.
B) S TEREO WIDTH AND IMAGING--Once you have located the best position for
the speakers and your chair for bass performance, separate the speakers by
50% of the distance from your chair to the speakers. (For example, if your chair
is 10 feet from the speakers, move the speakers 5 feet apart.) Now, move the
speakers apart in increments of 3 or 4 inches at a time, listening carefully at each
position. At some point you will start to hear two separate speakers instead of a
“stage effect” (or continuous image). When this occurs, your speakers are too far
apart: begin moving the speakers back in small increments until you notice a
point at which you achieve one cohesive “sound stage.”

C) LEFT/RIGH T--The MG12's are matched pairs and mirror-imaged. The serial
number for each speaker in the pair is the same, except for a “1" or “2" following
each serial number. As you face the front of the speakers, the speaker with the
“1" after its serial number has the tweeter near the left edge, and the speaker
with the “2" has the tweeter near the right edge.
To obtain correct phasing between the tweeter and bass of
the MG12, the tweeters should be placed on the outside.
NOTE: Once you have located the ideal speaker position you should mark it. A small
tack or piece of tape can be placed on the carpet so that your ideal listening spot can be
easily relocated when the speakers (or chair) are moved for cleaning, etc. In the event
that your ideal listening spot is inconvenient from the standpoint of the room layout and
decor, simply slide the speakers wherever they look best. Experience has shown that
the speakers can be placed close to a wall, and it will make little difference for FM or
background listening.
The entire placement procedure may seem like a great deal of work, but is necessary in
the setup of any high quality system. The time and effort expended should be
necessary only once, and will repay the owner with countless hours of musical
enjoyment.

Nice score. I like that you bought them w/out even demoing them. Do you like them better than your Mirages?

I had some MMG's for a brief time and I recall that they really shined in reproducing stringed instruments. Violins sounded more realistic than any other speaker I've had.

Those placement suggestions are such BS, just set them up and tweak them them as you go. I've owned a bunch of Magnepan and its not hard.

for sure......I mean I usually just plop them down where I think they should go, move them a bit to get them aligned up and sit back and enjoy, although I guess the tweets do go a specific way on these.

Congrats Organ Maggies are awesome speaks, when you can check out Quad as well as Martin Logan and of course my personal favorite from which I may never leave.....Sound Lab......their is something special with panels, especially with tubes....

Thanks guys. These things are super. I stayed up until 5am listening lol.

So I did play around with placement a bit. They're not toed in as much now and I get a wider soundstage. I will get them more vertical after I get used to the sound. Too lazy right now because I'll have to use a screw driver and use a different position on the legs.

Vocals sound eerie and spooky. Like having a ghost singing in front of you. I also love their sense of scale. You can really feel the size of the soundstage. Huge with the right recordings.

Kawiz,
Thanks for the tip. I checked the fuse and all the contacts are still super clean. I think I'll wait a bit. They're only 7 months old.

Xj,
Thanks for posting the instructions. I needed that. Mine came with the original box but there was no instruction book:(.

Now, about the Mirages.... They're very different. For on axis, the Maggies give a more stable soundfield. But off axis, the bipolar Mirage is superior.
Of course, the Maggies owns the Mirage when it comes to transparency, presence, immediacy, speed, etc. The things that the Mirage do better at would be overall dynamics, slam and bass.
Soundfield is about the same size. The Maggies give you more stable and super focused images while the Mirage is more diffused but with more body. So the M-12 are more 'airy' sounding.
I'll still be keeping the Mirage. I like them more for black and symphonic metal but prefer Maggies for vocals and jazz.
I noticed that the Mirage give a "They are here" feeling and the Maggies give you a "You are there". Nice to have both lol.

I can see how this can get addictive like Doro said. I think my next speaker purcahse will be the MG-1.6. Are they a big step over the 12?

Gonna pull an all nighter again. This is just insane. I've never heard this kind of refined sound before.

Nice!

I stay up every night listening to music as well more often than I used to. Just something about the way stringed instruments sound as well as vocals, sounds so real.

If you ditch those Maggies to upgrade, let me know! I think they're a way-step up from mine if I'm not mistaken. ;)
