SVS PB12-Ultra/2 (http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-ultra2.cfm) Subwoofer - Piano Gloss - 9/10 - *SOLD* to Bluemdpicker
Until the PB13-Ultra, this was the bar standard in hardcore subwoofers. I'm downsizing but this subwoofer was always WAY too much for my home theater. This is the baddest subwoofer I've heard to date. The piano gloss finish is stunning and it's always been a conversation starter since I bought it.
I had it signed prior to shipment in 2005 by SVS elite....Erik Kroner(Design Engineer/CS), Ron Stimpson(Co-Owner) and Tom Vodhanel(Co-Owner/Subwoofer Legend).
*UPDATE* I talked directly with Ron from SVS since I'm going to buy a PC13 Ultra and he still feels this is the best subwoofer they've made. I recently bought the SVS AS-EQ1 per his suggestion and it dramatically changed the performance of this subwoofer BUT I really need some space so I can fit some larger speakers in my HT. I don't want to sell it but in order to change things sometimes you have to sell things. I highly recommend the AS-EQ1, it's awesome.
The subwoofer was $2400/shipped in 2005.

How is this compares to the PB13 Ultra? My friend recently bought the PB13 Ultra for $1600 shipped but haven't heard the PB12.

The PB13 hits lower....otherwise its almost identical if not better thru 20hz but that's when the PB13 kicks into overdrive. The PB13 in piano gloss black is $1800/shipped.

I drove 3 hrs one way and paid $1000 for my Plus/2 over 3 years ago and it's still the best investment I've ever made in my system. And mine's not even piano black.
If you're within 300-400 miles of this and need a sub...GET IT!!! You WILL NOT be disappointed.

dorokusai

It's an Ultra/2 not a Plus/2...and it digs deeper and stronger. That's two(2) TV12....check out the links.

... bare with me here...this is killing me!!A word of advice, if I may: don't ever use the term "bare" when exchanging messages with dorokusai. Before you know it, strange things will be happening to you, and "bare" doesn't even begin to describe them. The correct spelling is "bear with me" in this case, but I'm not sure that will improve your situation much, unfortunately ... you're probably scr€wed at this point in any case.
Oh, and welcome to CP, BTW. Get protective gear ASAP before you post. You're gonna need it.

I would have to kill myself.
Nothing crazy but Ron swears by the AS-EQ1 and I'm going to try one out....that's all. I didn't really care if this sold anyways. I'm told I won't care about a PB13 "upgrade" after this piece works its magic.

hey mark, you ever have any hand's on experience with the velodyne offering? i'm just wondering. if so, we'd all like to know how the svs stacks up against it.
dorokusai
11-26-2009, 09:50 PM
The only experience I have with Velo is either vintage, HGS or a couple DD series. Velodyne used to be the bar standard in my world a decade ago but I'm on my 5th SVS and have no plans to change anything. The Velodyne just didn't hit as hard as the SVS but keep in mind I never did a H2H....those comments are just based on my memory.
The only subwoofer that I've liked more than the various SVS so far has been the REL T series. It's a really nice subwoofer for musical applications, not HT, and seamlessly blended well with a handful of different loudspeakers I was playing with at the time. It's quick and very tight.
Since then I have steered more towards a smaller, less low end brutal subwoofer for music and a more obnoxiously angry subwoofer for HT.

If the AS-EQ1 does for your SVS what MultEQ XT did for my 20-39CS+, I can't wait to read about it. I actually ditched the ART-351 EQ I was using on mine because Audyssey did such a great job of taming my room-induced peaks.
dorokusai
11-26-2009, 10:20 PM
Ron has been raging about it for awhile but I just never committed. He stated that if I didn't like it, I can punch him in the belly at CES next year. That's a helluva challenge in my book :)
Now you have me even more excited KS.
kuntasensei
11-27-2009, 03:35 AM
I'll go ahead and warn you... After the EQ'ing, there's a bit of a shock at the way it sounds because you're not used to it, even if you were doing some equalization before like I was. Give yourself a little time with it post-equalization to see how it performs with material you're used to hearing. When I first experienced MultEQ's equalization of my sub, my first impression was that there was suddenly too much mid-bass. Then I looked back at my old EQ charts and realized that I was just thinking that because Audyssey had managed to fix a bit of cancellation between my mains and subwoofer around 65Hz.
The best way I can describe it is "brutal". That sucker now gives me musical bass when called for, but the punch-in-the-chest bass with the right movie soundtrack. Considering the AS-EQ1 has higher filter resolution than MultEQ XT does, I think you're gonna be happy with the results.
dorokusai
11-27-2009, 09:13 AM
I'm expecting that KS but I'm sure it will still cause me some mental adjustment. I was using some basic room correction when I was running the B&K. That really helped compared to when I just went plug and play with the subwoofer ages ago.
It sounds like you're dialed in pretty good and I'd love to hear it. Thanks for the well wishes. I'm off to wax my subwoofer and dig out some cables :D

dorokusai
06-20-2010, 01:36 AM
Yes and no. I'm still running the dual SurroundBars with the SVS.
I'm going to switch it up again and run the LSi9 from CAA with dual LSiC center channels in parallel for a front stage using the same Onkyo. Depending on how I can route the AC wiring, I'll use the new Polk Wireless Surround F/X for rear channels instead of OWM.
As long as my front stage is solid, due to the overall room change, the rears should be easy.
