So my collection of cd's is nearing 200 and still growing. Every cd I at least like 2 songs or more on them. I think of it as a personal collection and something I can enjoy for many years to come. My friend on the other hand thinks I have an obsession and tells me to get a life and stop wasting my time with getting cd after cd. So my question is this. Is this normal for a audio guy to do? I mean to build a collection. Also how big is your collection?

I have about 60. I have another 7,000 songs or so stored digitally. Lossless as much as possible.

Fan, I have about a thousand CDs, almost entirely classical. This is by no means an unusually large collection , as there're quite a few over ten thousand. One of the terrific things about the current audio scene is the great music available in great sound and at bargain prices around $5-$10 each. This would have seemed like an impossible dream back in the old LP days. So, this is the last thing that there should be any hesitation about buying and enjoying.

I've got about 400 cd's. Obviously many people are going digital, but I just like having the actual CD.

I agree I like having the cd but also like having it in iTunes in lossless format.

Too many to count...and and probably an equal number of LPs. in addition to 300+ DVDs.

the fact that you take the time to listen to your collection and build upon it sets you apart from today's norm, music adds countless value to our lives in too many ways to list. Those who do not take the time to listen are unfortunately missing out on a great pleasure as well as a very healthy activity.

I think I surpassed 1000 recently.

I have about 150 LP's stored somewhere. I really haven't purchased any vinyl since the late eighties.

I have nowhere near the collection I would like to have.

Funny thing is, when I only had 150 titles to choose from, I always knew exactly what I wanted to hear. Now that I have so many, sometimes I just stare at the rack dumb founded. :o

I have about 300 cds. More into my vinyl collection of 3500 lps and going this weekend to look at a 700 lp pile a local has for sale. There's so much more good music on the vinyl that will never make it to cd. Screw the digital stuff.

If we're just counting actual CD's that I've purchased at the store, I've got about 750...if we're counting CD's that I've burned as well, put that number at about 2000.

The vinyl collection needs some work though...right now I have 5!!!...lol

Mine are all "store bought". I don't even listen to copied discs. Most just sound bad due to so much error correction having to take place. Maybe it's in my head, but they always sound funny to me and in an unpleasant way.

I do however burn copies of stuff I keep in my car so as not to damage the original.

I can definitely see your point, but at least half of the burned CD's that I have aren't even available for purchase. A lot of them are Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan bootlegs...a bunch of Allmans boots...stuff like that.

Plus, I don't have the money to buy every CD I want, so burning all of my friends CD's is a great way to build the collection. A lot of copied stuff that I have will end up being purchased sometime down the line.

Same here I buy either from the store or from amazon or if I am feeling spontaneous I will buy "lot of cds" from ebay for like 120 cd's it will be like 80 bucks.

Awesome statement! The fact of the matter is that I wouldn't have come close to finding this forum if this did not reflect exactly what I feel. And I imagine that most here feel the same. Yeah, tweeking the system or adding this component or that for improvement are great and no doubt give a certain sense of satisfaction. But when it comes down to it, its the music. Whether its played on a $50 boom box or a $50,000 rig....its the music.

Up until the year 2000, all of my CDs were "store bought" I can still recall clearly when my brother-in-law handed me a first batch of CDs he burned for me that year. Basically, the technology of burning CDs as well as expanding library collections of CDs has enabled me to be more discerning and selective in what I purchase. By 2000, I had about 450 titles (I started collecting in 1990). While I still have these (aside from some that I sold back in the day), I would say that I probably would listen only to 40% at present time. Some of this is due to a change in taste, but I think that without being able to listen albums back in the 1990s I "recklessly" bought a number of CDs, maybe based on a song or two without listening to it and this resulted in a lot of mediocre or poor purchases.

So, these days I'll primarily stick to stuff that I've burned and really liked through several listenings before purchasing. If I do like it, I much prefer to have an original copy if its in print and available. Scanning my CD shelf, I would say that I've only added about 200 store-purchased titles over the past decade (compared to 450 during the previous 10 years of collecting), but all of which I'm still excited about. So, burning technology has indeed functioned as a filter for me.

I have over 1000 cds and have been collecting them since I bought the first Sony made.

1000 cds take a lot of space in shelves. I have them all located in Sony ES 400 jukeboxs which saves space and makes them available instantly. I like to sometimes put the Sony on random shuffle and see what comes up. I also have a list of all the cds by jukebox number and alphabetically which makes it very easy to play anything in a few seconds. The jukebox also keeps the cds from damage during handling or when you forget to place them back in the plastic cases.

I look at burning cd's this way if you make an exact copy of the original your going to have a good copy. But at this day in age were you can go on amazon and buy that cd for 1.25 with maybe a dollar shipping, I would rather get that than a burned copy. I am very skeptical when someone hands me a copied cd because I do not knwo were they got the original from. If it was from the internet I chuck the copy or hand it back to them.

Also I just won this yesterday hope to get it soon. I know it is not the top of the line but it will work for now.

I've got 1,378 cd's stored in 4 Sony 400 machines and cataloged in Music Collector software. I use the random shuffle feature quite often and discover lots of good music that way. Most of my cd's are store bought originals or small "lots" I bought here and there plus some copies of friends cd's.

I never counted my lp's, but it must be close to 1,500.

Yes, I bought it at Tweeter for over a $1000. There were only a few CD to purchase back then. I was just amazed by the quiet background, no pops or clicks, and the remote control option. My ex wife still has it and it still works.

That is amazing. I have worn out several players since I had that machine. I got it second hand from a buddy who bought it new.

I have maybe 150 cds. I used to have probably in the neighborhood of 400-500 cds, but my collection got cleaned out pretty well over the years by "guests". I probably have about 600 records. I don't hardly look for cds anymore since getting bit by the vinyl bug, but I've been thinking about picking up a new cd player with SACD capability to rekindle the cd spirit.

DO IT!!

Also I did bid on that 1000 cd's collection on ebay. I hope I get it, only thing is that I will need a external hard drive and a new cd tower to hold them all LOL

Just added another one to my collection tonight.

Genesis Platinum Edition!

So far I love it and have been listening to it all the way home and now on my system. I am officially over the 200 mark!!! With no intention of stopping. I took the liberty of alphabetizing them last week. Because I do not want to do that when I have over 500 lol
