Hopefully a simple answer :) Looking for a solid state amp. Not sure if they make something like this, only ever see it listed as 2, 3, or 5.

+1 to everything above.
Either that or people sometimes bridge (if it's capable) a stereo (2 channel) amp.

I'm guessing, and hoping, that they are cheaper than a typical 2, 3, or 5 channel amp. Can someone list a few off the top of their heads so I can do some research? Thanks bunches!

Here's a pair of Mono Tube Amps:

I'm looking for an amp to power a center channel speaker...CS400. 250 watts is speaker max...so anything from 200+ should do it. Didn't check out the tube posted, but will now, and thanks. I'm not too familiar with tube amps...it was once suggested by someone I met that they are a little more difficult to handle - upkeep, and that they can get very hot...it's for a family room home theatre :)
Thanks,
James

If you take about 4400 off that amp, I may be able to afford it :)

I'd recommend a-gon, or ebay for finding a single Outlaw monoblock. You can also try the B-stock section at the Outlaw website, they were going for $295 ea.

I used to have a Carver a753x, it was 3 Channels, I used one for the center and the other two for the surrounds. you could use it for all 3 front speakers.
it was 250Watts into 8 ohms & 400 in 4ohms per channel
it looked like this: http://guukan.org/for_sale/Carver_a753x/Carver_a753x.html

Three channels to power the fronts and center was an option...I'm asking not because I'm looking to buy soon, just looking to learn and do some research. Would there be any advantages to using a 2 channel for fronts and one mono for the center rather than a 3 channel for all three?

With a 2ch amps for the mains and a mono amp for the center I'd say you could have the best of both worlds (HT and 2ch)

You may also consider 3 mono's for the front! The separation and headroom will bring an entirely new dimension to your 2 channel/HT experience.

You can get really super cheap THX certificated mono amps by MARANTZ for about $90 for the 500 series and $150 for the 700 series on ebay . If you dont find them there, go to audiogon but it would cost around $120 unshipped for a 500

Can you give me the official model numbers fo those? Is 'monoblock' or 'mono' in the series or are they called Marantz 700? Marantz 500? I'm having trouble finding these.

umm, there's this, for example:
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-812
I guess it is stereo, but also meant to be bridged.

A better answer :-) IMNHSHO would be something like a single McIntosh MC-30, MC-60, or MC-75... or how about a Marantz 9? These options are a little pricier, even though they're only available used...

Heres the 500's on audiogon http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?ampstran&1261495549&/Marantz-MA500U-Monoblock-Ampli
this examples a bargin
I think that ebay listing for the marantz mono's is way overpriced for the older version's listed above you could get two newer ones for http://cgi.ebay.com/Two-Marantz-MA-500-Mono-Block-Amps-MA500-No-Reserve_W0QQitemZ150384189976QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH _DefaultDomain_0?hash=item230398a218 or just 1 for http://cgi.ebay.com/Marantz-MA-500-Monoblock-Amps-MA500-Mono-Block_W0QQitemZ220501794677QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_D efaultDomain_0?hash=item3356ee5f75 essentially the 700 marantz mono's are the same but more power and more expensive so I recommend bridging two 500 series instead of buying one 700
