laserdisc used as a cd player

I picked up an old Pioneer laserdisc cdp-s201. I was just wondering how a laserdisc player compares to a good cd player in quality of sound. I don't know much about laserdisc players but I am learning. From what I read on the internet the picture quality looks better on an analog TV. Is that correct. Any information would be appreciated.

Ah yes, Laserdisc, awesome. I remember when I got my first one. I was so excited. I had a Sony 36 inch XBR and it looked great. I even liked getting up to flip the disk over or change to disk 2. It ruled. I sold off my Disks and player years ago. Someone in here picked it up.
Anyway now that you took me down memory road which by the way life was much simpler back then, you have a Pioneer player when will have pretty good DAC's in it. Most likely Burr brown. Pioneer has been big on there DAC's for years.This is where Pioneer Players shine , double duty. Yes your Laserdisc should sound great spinning Cd's.

Oh, yes. Mantis. Thank you. That brings me back an old memory of an Asian guy with the huge Warehouse ( in SouthWest of Houston) that was full of Pio Elite and Apogee slant 6/8 and the Carver products....He presssed hard trying to sell me on the Legato Link D/A feature...May he rest in peace:D.

Back in the day,either Theta or CAL (or both?)used a heavily modded laserdisc transport as their top of line CD transport to feed their SOTA outbourd DAC's.

Reading this makes me want to build a fully retro surround system. Rear Projection floor tv with laserdisk , Vcr and a standard cable box all wired in S video. How cool would that be? Find a nice Pioneer ELite Tv with all Pioneer ELite gear. Maybe some Mirage Om series floor standing speakers or Vintage Polk Rt series. Man I loved those days. god I miss the past.

Those were the days, Sir Mantis. My audio mentor who has 2 rooms full of old gear from Nak cassette deck to Pio reel-to-reel, Technics TT...all look as new. He refused to sell them even though his hearing is declining along with his age. Some die-hard audiophile, Mr. Kim.

Well I hooked up the old laserdisc and it's sounds good. Very comparable to anything else I have heard. We may be in the age of BR but that doesn't seem to mean the latest tech system is always the best. Look at the resurgence of the LP and if you read the forum all you hear about is how great tube receivers are that were made forty years ago. I don't know what the best equipment is all I know is if it sounds good relax and enjoy it.

It seems like there is a niche for everything. Weather you like the sound of LP, CD, SACD, Laserdisc, Blue Ray or just lessoning to a tube radio it is all a matter of personal taste. I guess that is what makes this hobby fun. There is something for everyone. I don't know if the laserdisc will make a resurgence but for twenty bucks it was a nice surprise. I personally really like the gear made in the late eighties and early nineties. It seems it was the pinnacle of two channel gear before the HT experience set in. Look at the Polk speakers of the day such as the SDA SRS 1.2tl's, hook that up to some sweet seperates at the time and it's all good. To me it doesn't get any better than that for music but like I said it's all a matter of personal taste.

OMG! I actually have such a system in operation right now as my mom's setup.

Pioneer LaserDisc Karaoke player with dedicated CD tray (Dolby Digital 5.1 capable)....check
Sony 46" analog rear projection TV....check
Panasonic 4 head VHS Hi-Fi VCR....check (this piece was removed about a month ago to hook up Comcast's digital converter box)

Am I behind the times or what? Retro? :eek::rolleyes::D

What's with the flipping of the discs? You didn't spring for the models with dual side play? :) My Panasonic reference LD player has it! :)
