Jolida JD9 and Audiogon [Archive]

Well i pulled the trigger a Jolida JD9 phono pre off of Audiogon today.
This is my first purchase from Audiogon, so far good comunication and smooth.

Will post pics when I get it.

I rolled in a pair of JJ gold pins and replaced the coupling capacitors with Claritycap ESA's.

Now that you mention it, I believe "Undertow" started it. IIRC, he used Claritycap MR's instead of ESA's.

Since I am about to be a tube noob in the next few days, Where do you guys buy your tubes from? Ebay/Audiogon?

And how do you know what to look for as far as size to fit your application?

I got my Jolida today, I have not hooked it up yet but I do have one question for those of you that might know.

My Denon DL160 is 160ohm so do I set my phono pre to 100ohm or 300ohm?

I am aslo thinking of manufacturing a new cover with a removable access door above the tubes so I don't have to pull the whole cover off to swap tubes out. This unit came with a black face as well.

Well, what are you waiting for? :)

Just leave the cover off until you find a set of tubes you're happy with.

Ok I got it all hooked up last night and now I am getting a terrible hum in my speakers and it gets louder as you turn up the volume, GROUND LOOP MAYBE? again?

Where do I start now as the manual says for it to be plugged in to a wall socket?

Try sticking a screwdriver in the wall outlet to see if somethings loose in there.:)

Is the ground connection of the turntable screwed to the case of the jolida? It must be to prevent a loud hum.

I've had issues with stock TT cables that are poorly insulated. Make sure that is not an issue.

Yep that is done as well

I've had issues with stock TT cables that are poorly insulated. Make sure that is not an issue.

It is still there without the TT cables hooked up.

Just an example,one day one of my subs started to hum VERY LOUD!!!.This sub is auto on/off, whenever it receives a signal it comes on. My stereo was off but the sub started up ????? I changed the rca (line level) cable and that fixed it.I still don"t know why,nor do I know if this will help you.
PS. yes the sub was pluged into the wall outlet but it should not have come on.

Are you using the high output on the rear of the Jolida? I used the low output RCA's and then played with the gain switches (MM, MC Low, MC High) until I found the level I wanted with the least amount of hum. I then switched to a better set of cables from my TT to the inputs on the Jolida and from the Jolida to the preamp. No more issues. That phono pre is very flexible AND very sensitive. Lots of gain from it also.

Update: I got a Panamax 5400 last week and I was still having a little problem with a hum coming from my speakers with the Jolida phono pre, well I hooked everthing up to the Panamax works great but I still had a hum with the Jolida. Well the Panamax has a grounding lug on the back so I thought I would ground the TT to it instead of the Jolida, well problem solved not sure why I can't ground it to the Jolida but I have been back to spinning vinyl the last few days.

I will say having a dedicated phono pre is the way to go This unit is fantastic.

That's great Larry! Try switching between the 100 ohm load and the 300 to see which sounds better with your Denon cart.

I have done that and I really don't notice any difference in sound, Now swapping the IC's from low to high thats where the bigger changes come into play.:cool:

Running the high output you'll want to back off the input gains. I've even had to turn off ALL the dips on the MM/MC selectors. For that cart I'd stay with the 100ohm load and play with the pico loads. Try a setting of 150 pico and see how you like that.
