Hello,

There is an Outlaw 1050 AVR for sale near here for $150. It seems to have the features I need but I thought I would check in with you guys first. It has pre-outs and 5.1 analog audio inputs. Since there will be a Blu-Ray player sometime in my future, can a player like the Oppo BDP-83 deliver Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio through those 5.1 inputs?

My goal is to have a system that is excellent for 2 channel music and good for HT. I have these speakers to work with:

Fronts: Monitor 10B (or SDA 1B when I finish refurbishing them).
Center: single Monitor 10B or none (future CS350 or CS1000 possible).
Surrounds: Monitor 10B or Monitor 7A
Subwoofer: none planned.

I have a Parasound HCA 1000A to run the fronts (125 wpc into 8Ω, 200 wpc into 4Ω) I would run the center and surrounds off the AVR for now until I find another power amp. Will the Outlaw 1050 (65 wpc into 8Ω) be sufficient for the next year?

I would hook up my NAD 106 preamp to the auxiliary input for turntable use.

With Blu-Ray becoming more common there are now a lot of older AVRs showing up on CL which do not have HDMI in/out. So these seem to be a good buy used as long as I am willing to spend more on a BDP with analog out, right?

Bottom line: Is the Outlaw 1050 for $150 the right choice at the right price for what I want to do? Are there better options to look for in this price range?

Regards,
Jim

Yes, DTA-MA and all other hi def formats will go through the 5.1 analog inputs.

The outlaw receiver is pretty awesome for $150. You won't do better than that... and it should run your speakers fine.

My thanks to all who replied. I found the manual and was able to determine that the 1050 had what I needed and I bought it Tuesday evening. No testing was possible before I bought, but the seller said he would take it back if there were any problems, like a dead channel. Yesterday I tested everything that I could; it all worked so I didn't get the chance to test the seller's word. There is a bit of occasional scratchiness and hiss on the FM input; that could be over the air static that I was unaware of on my Yamaha RX-V496.

I now have it set up as a 4.0 system with Monitor 10B fronts and Monitor 7A surrounds. Having a third Monitor 10 as a center, lying on its side in front of the TV stand didn't work very well. It was 18" in front of the screen and didn't acoustically anchor to the screen. The fronts are running off the Parasound HCA1000A

I watched the World Series game and an episode of Dr Who and did not miss having a center. Tonight I have up U-571 so I'll see how it does with a more elaborate soundtrack.

The 1050 does not have a phono input; I am using the NAD 106 preamp with my TT, plugging into the AUX input. This seems smoother and more detailed sounding than when I went from the 106 to the Parasound. I will have to try an A-B test to be sure. I will also be trying my SDA-1B pair to see if I get more believable imaging than I did with the old setup.

Regards,

Jim
