I'm taking apart the VPI Scoutmaster and boxing it up to take down to PF with me....

Every time I put the stylus guard on the cartridge, I damn near have a heart attack. One small slip, and a 500 dollar cartridge....RUINED.

Well, it's on there. The table is all boxed up...man, I need a beer to calm my nerves.

I make sure I NEVER wear long sleeves when I have plans to get anywhere near my turntable for just that reason.

Crap. I thought I'd slip under the ol' radar. Oh well.

I hear ya' with the TT moving. I have a MMF-5 that was packed well and I had done it many times before. The last time I moved it? No sound and the lever that raises the arm failed. During repair? The platter dropped slightly and chipped/cracked.

Damn, damn, damn. Enjoy the beer. :D

I hear you, ol' son.
Because the stylus on my Clearaudio Virtuoso Ebony is nonreplaceable (well, not user-replaceable, at any rate) and I am a klutz (and we have evil kittehs in the house), I keep the stylus guard on it when not in use. I am convinced that it is a matter of when (not if) I will slip or otherwise eff up with the guard and end the stylus' little life.

I hear ya too! Who designs these things? My fingers are too big for the tiny guard that came with my cartridge. Maybe drink before so you are are relaxed...and if something does go bad, you are kind of numb to it.

I hear you on this one. Just this past Friday night, I was cleaning off my record with a microfiber towel instead of my carbon fiber brush and the edge of the towel caught the stylus on the Ortofon OM-30 cart on my new for me Project table and bent it. Ouch! Fortunately, it's very easy to replace on the OM-30, unfortunately the cheapest I could find a replacement stylus for is $190.00. I am such an idiot. I learned my lesson. Never get out of the boat, and never clean records with a mirofiber brush anywher near your styus!

An excellent reason to buy carts that have built in guards! <jk> I know most of the higher end carts don't have guards built in. Its too bad really.

back in the ole days, some of the Shure cartridges had styli that retracted to protect themselves from certain forms of abuse (mostly lateral abuse) :-)
