I found a Sunfire Signature Grand Cinema Series I for $1400.00

According to sunfire it was built in 2001 and has 400 watts into 8ohm and should do 800 watts into 4ohm

You guys think this is a good buy or too much $$

I am going to answer it in a strong sounding tone. however I mean no disrepect.

If you ask a question like that, the reasonable answer is Yeah go ahead we are all behind you.- happy now!

Most people will tell you the more power the better, go for it - are you happier now!

The reality is you have not provided any information as to what do you want to do with it. it is clear to me that you want an amp, and even more clear that your mind has already been made up to be a sunfire amp, how do I know this? because I went throght the same steps you are going through.

A more realistic (but you will not believe it so again buy it.)
what are the speakers? what do you see yourself buying in the future? most speakers are rated 125 to 200watts, so a 200watt amp will be more than enough.
What is the size of your room the bigger the room the better the speakers need to be and the watts go up.
bottom line is most speakers don't need an external amp as long as you have a decent AVR. I have a SC-07 pioneer and i can tell you that if I would have use the RTI line from polk I would have not need an external amp the avr is good enough.

If you have 4ohm speakers then get an external amp but keep in mind most 4ohm speakers still run in the 200-250watts again a 200watt amp will do just fine.
Anyhow I know your mind is already made up as mine was so forget about what anyone will say and if you have the money go for it. I know you will find a way to use it.
good luck.

I have a set of RTiA's and noticed a SWEET and VERY noticeable improvement when i added my Emotiva xpa5. For my AVR i am running a yammie htr-6290 or in the US known as a rxv-1900 so it's no slouch....

Sunfire is designed by one of the best in the audio realm so i don't think you'll be at a loss

Generally speaking, power is like money. The more you have, the better off you are. Excluding the "my 10W tube amp is better than any 1000W solid-state amp" folk, most speakers will sound better with more power. Assuming it is good clean, honestly rated power.

I ran my 4 LSi15s with my AVR (rated 175W/ch but who knows) and they sounded great. I went to a Sunfire TGA-5400 (800W/ch @ 4 ohm), and they REALLY sound great. Not louder, but clearer, cleaner, more precise, and with much tighter bass.

I upgraded my 2 channel system from a single 2 channel amp at 350W/ch @ 4 ohm to 2 mono amps at 800W/ch @ 4 ohms and the sound improvement was obvious using PSB Synchrony One towers. The improvement was not subtle, it was obvious. Again, it is not louder, but clearer, more precise.

So, yes you can have many enjoyable hours with an AVR, but you can get better sound with more power.

:D I find that it's best to do it this way, that way no one can say they don't understand.

I have lots of patience, but when someone asks the same question 10 times, my patience generally comes to an end.

I would have killed to get a deal on a Sunfire Prepro/amp combo. Instead I bided my time for over a year to finally get my TGP 3! And I paid 1100.00 for it by itself, & 1800.00 for the amp the year before.
