Well, there's the temporary option of a government takeover of several key banks and industries, which were absolutely doomed to fail without government intervention at the time, or let them fail and see what an actual great depression feels like.

I don't like it either, but I don't see any other option. Even in hindsight. The problem isn't government takeovers, it's that these companies were allowed to get this big - that if they failed, the economy goes down with them.

They require banks to give $300,000 loans to people making $20,000 a year for "diversities sake". Since anybody can get a loan houses start springing up everywhere deluding the market with houses. Then you have the loans go tits up and a glut of houses on the market which means lower property value and youre in trouble. Not to mention the $5/gallon gas due to the government making 85% of our oil reserves off limits to kick the whole thing off. If these companies had failed, it wouldve hurt no doubt but the market wouldve corrected itself. Instead we simply prolonged this and maybe even made it worse.

Absolutely right. Bush is to blame for a lot of this crap with 8 years of his big government policies. He did open the door to fascism by signing the TARP bill. But I guarantee you he would never had taken over GM and Chrysler as well as Wall Street. He never wouldve signed on the taking over the health care industry. He never wouldnt signed on to the cap and trade bill that by Obama's own admission will "cause energy costs to skyrocket" and I guarantee you he never wouldve allowed a "pay czar" to tell companies how much they can pay. Bush did open the door for this but the democrats, unchecked since they own Congress and the White House, that are doing all this. Using the force of government to take over the private sector is pure evil.

. . . speaking of airfare, the 6 of us flew to Hawaii for 35,000 credit card air miles each in 2006, for 70,000 credit card air miles in 2008, and I now notice it's up to 90,000 credit card air miles for the trip we are planning for summer 2010.

I think the camper/yacht is the right answer! :)

I was standing 10 deep in a line today at the post office with no one at the counter. There were two 60-70 year old men in front of me complaining about the service, our Tax dollars at work and the cost of a stamp. Finally one of the clerks sauntered out, fiddled for about 2 minutes and then said next and the line started to move. A second clerk sauntered out even slower than the first and said next. Meanwhile a lady came in and rung a bell for a clerk from the back to come because she needed a cart for a lot of mail from a commercial company and the second clerk said to her. "You can ring it but I don't think anybody will come." The lady said she needed a cart for her large quantity of mail and the clerk told her to get in the line and wait for her turn. The line was now about 14-15 deep at this point.

When I reached the counter I handed my delivery notice card to her and she looked at it and said this is old. It is dated 10-7-09 and I said I found it in my mailbox today and I am expecting a package. She said I will have to go check the computer and went in the back for another 5 minutes or so and came back with my package. The contents of my package were also damaged when I opened it up at home.

Slow unfriendly service, human error and damaged goods. The post office also losses several billion dollars a year providing this service.

All that I could think of is I hope this is not how health care will be if it passes the Senate.

Well it is the government's responsibility to help maintain a competitive market. For example - in most cases monopolies are illegal because they create a lack of economic competition. I do agree the government had a role in this economic downturn but probably not for the same reasons you have. I think a lack of government oversight in the banking industries was a huge part of this current predicament we're in. (Notice I said oversight and not regulations.) Predatory lending and the manners in which loans were valued was another big part.

I don't think any economist is arguing this recession had much to do with offshore drilling. Please cite your sources on this one. I'd like to hear why you think this.

As far as the bailout, I believe any president would have done the same. I think this way because of these outcomes:

1. You pass the bailout bills and buy out some failing companies,
Then,
the economy recovers.
- You look like a hero
the economy falls apart.
- No one can say you didn't try.

2. You don't pass the bailout bills and don't buy out some failing companies,
Then,
the economy recovers.
- Great. No one remembers that you didn't do anything.

- This is by far the worst scenario. You really can't take this risk. Everyone will hate you for being a lame duck - you have no chance of being re-elected, and you'll have increased difficulties trying to gain any groups' trust again in the rest of your term.


Number 2 is a risk that no president could afford to take.
