I am preparing to do a "refurbish" of my SRT system.

If you remeber the Kansas police did a number on them while I had by brother in law driving them to Tulsa from Truckee. Long story short I already replace all of the grills with NOS pieces but i never refinished them.

Are there any modifications to be done to the crossovers / wiring? I know these are common mods with the older SDA's but i havent read much about the SRT line.

I was going to do a piano black but I changed my mind, i will restain them in ebony, some minor veneer repairs then finish them with a high gloss clear wet sanded and polished. I will also be replacing the feet between the cabinets to something a lot lower profile, any thoughts on the reduction in air space between the sub cabinets and SDA cabinets causing a resonance issue?

Still debating on the finish for the plastic bases of the subs, any pics of modded SRTs?

You must post some pics of the project as it unfolds.

Sorry to read of the unfortunate "run in". What a drag.

What was the end result from the police fiasco?

I'll post pics.

Outcome with police... i really wanted to go after them but i was going to spend more money and time than it was worth.

Should have looked into legal aid. They usually provide free consol, and can help find a lawyer that will take your case with little to no cost.

An attorney was not the issue, the retail cost to refinish the speakers was about 1500.

So you have to sue a podunk out of state police department, relatively low actual damages, and you have to show there was not a reason for the vehicle and the contents to be searched. It just was not worth the time, besides now I have to make them look like the should have from the begining.

What was the reason for the stop, I don't remember off hand. Did they find any thing illegal? Did they have a legitimate reason to stop him. It seems to me if they did not have a real reason to stop him, and did not find anything I would think they did not have due cause. I'm not an officer or an attorney so I would not know for sure, but I think Wingnut would know.

I'd sell them if I were you and buy something else because I don't think they will ever sound great. There's got to be a reason they only made them for two years, if they were awesome then they should had made them for at least as long as they made SDA's

Those Main drivers are immpossible to find, I'd unsrew each one and sell them for $200 each because there's people out there that have the money and would spend it to buy spares for their's

Oh come on... Anyone knows, if you get stopped they will find a reason to make it legit. Legal, No, but does it happen, almost always. My advice, make sure your lights works and drive the speed limit. These are the top2 reasons people get stopped.

Don't have to let them search your car until they get a warrant. That's why they say, "Do you mind if we take a look in your trunk?"

Hope you get them back to spec and cosmetically appealing. Not to derail, but maybe the "Sarge" will read this and offer some advice regarding speaker search.Happened to some SDA's I bought in Louisana,,alledgedly pulled over for speeding @ 2 am,, dog acted like it smelled something(bullshit), they got as far as removing the binding post terminal, looking around with a flashlight, before they stopped(driver flashed the "Mason sign" and one of the officers reconized it and stopped the proceeding. Thank you Jesus. Speakers arrived safe and sound. As an earlier poster stated,, make sure the vehicle is "tip top" and OBEY the speed laws,,especially if you are out of state.

The reason people despise cops are for the reason mentioned above and who can blame them!! I know plenty of them and see what goes on first hand and it is pathetic.

I have a friend who was railroaded into a DUI (and wasn't drunk) and he can't do anything about it without risking jailtime if he fights and loses and spends a bunch of $ on a civil case. The police in car video shows it all too. Can't say more than that, but this particular town is known for the same type of b.s. all the time.

Well, Las you heard them at PF '08 and you still feel they weren't great?. I was very impressed with them, perhaps not for the original $10K, but they really, really impressed me. Especially for what they sell for used. A 90's statement piece no question.

To the OP, yes, yes, yes refurb them and keep them.

I am not going to sell them or part out. They are in fine condition with the exception of some cosmetic issues. Now they will look better than new.

The vehicle was a brannd new rental mini van from the reno airport. Minor speeding infraction maybee, but I dont know I was not there, dont really care as this happened about three years ago and the past is the past.

Just looking for info on upgrades if any. If not I will look into doing the upgrades myself.

Wow...seriously?

I'd guess that the reason for the short production run would be more related to the $10,000 price tag that came with them.

I've never heard the SRT's before...but I'd love to sometime.

I'd say to keep them too, simply for their apparent rarity, but pix would be helpful to see how they are. I also agree with the cost theory, not many had the coin to buy them when new, probably limited their production run?

I think they sounded amazing myself, but perhaps Sal figures they'd be worth more to the OP if he parted them out, giving him the opp to buy something to replace them? Although I'd like to hear from him as to why he feels that way,
I'm leaning towards giving him the right to his opinion.

Keep them for sure! I have heard two sets of these and they sound fabulous! The SRT's have external crossovers in the control module. I have not heard of any tweaks to these. Where's our resident SRT expert? Hey Ed, where are you?:D

He might be on his way to Texas!

I think personally the biggest upgrade you can possibly do is to remove the plate amps in the subs, and run them with external amplification. I thought the bass was reasonable with the plate amps till i heard them run with a power amp. Thinking back they sounded muddy, and lacked definition.

Do post pics of the refurb, i should've done progress photo's of mine when i did them.

The control module only does the SDA portion, how about the high/low portion for the tweeter / full range drivers?

I was in that room with a senior polkie and we both couldn't believe how crappy they sounded

the best speakers in Al's house that day were the VM20's with the pair of micro3000 subs. That was a kick ass set of speakers

Hey man I'm just being honest, You can spend all the money you want on those SRT's and they will never sound as good as a pair of 1.2TL's

Just don't ever listen to any big SRS's because then you'll be saying in the back of your mind, Damn that Lasareath dude was correct!!!! URGH!!!!!!

There are also passive crossovers inside the cabinets.

I would love to hear a pair of them modded.

That is what I had in mind to begin with. What are the typical mods for the crossover network?

Replace with same components but in a higher tolerance capacitors and coils?

I'm really not sure how the SRT's could sound crappy to anyone. I personally like the tone and bass of the SRS's slightly better but one is not much different than the other unless the bigger than life bass you could force out of the SRT is not set up right.

Just a little bit of ego there it seems. I've never heard of the SRT's (I hear SRT and I think Dodge, damn TV commercials) but I've always been curious as to what a pair of speakers that costs at least 5 large sounds like....

I own just about all the sda series speakers made with the exception of sda 2 and sda 3.1tl.
They all have their own unique sound.
As far as i'm concerned, for stereo I prefer my 1.2 tls and for surround sound music or movies, I prefer my SRT.
This does not mean the SRT are suited just for Surround sound. Quite the contrary. They sound excellent with music as well.

I will say that the SRT have the best "sda sound" available out of all the sda series speakers.

Sal, whenever you want to hear my SRT system, let me know. They will change your oppinion.
