Gentlemen,

Since I aquired the psw202 I have been looking for ways to improve its already impressive sound. The thing can produce some serious volume, and can reach low notes suprisingly well, and with finese. Something you just do not see with subs in that price range.

I tried using upgraded sub connections and although the difference was there, it was very subtle. This afternoon I took myself to Circuit City, set out to purchase a Polk 10' gnx car audio sub. It seemed to be a perfect match, not only is it Polk, but the driver suppose to be capable of 18 hz, and easy to drive, compatible with the amp at 4 ohms.... good deal.

To my suprise, they had a sale going, two for the price of one. How could I resist? I came home with both :)

Got home, replaced the drivers and began testing. Now considering the house now is quite and my mother has a headache, I can only test this thing modestly. I can say however, I have been more than impressed with this sub.

Adding this sub has eliminated the boomy nature of the original. It is very reserved and blends with the JBL N 28's very well. It comes in when its needed, and backs off and lets the 8' drivers on the JBL's do their part.

The results have been splended, and suprising. It seems to be much more accurate, and can hit the low notes very well. I have yet to put some serious volume into the thing, that will have to come at a later time. Until then, I will respond here with updates as I cover more testing grounds.

Interesting, keep us posted. How much fill was in the 202 when you opened it?

Unless things changed with the new Polk auto subs, usually a ported enclosure is a no-no. Bandpass or sealed only. Then again, the amp in the 202 probably isn't pushing the gnx anywhere near what it is capable of.

Cheers,
Russ

Russ, a Decent amount of filler, almost all of which was contained along the bottom of the sub. A very clean look inside, I was impressed.

I closed the port and noticed only a hint of improvement, not in deph, but in clarity. Again, it was only a very minor change. Of course, I only used a rag so that may not do anything in the first place. heh.

The amp on the 202 seems to have no trouble pushing the gnx, though I agree it may not be pushing it to the limits of its capability. The other GNX driver is going towards my DIY sub, a completely original idea (that I have seen), layout, and so fowarth. It will be interesting :) :)

Awesome, maybe you are on-track for that musical AND deep low end you have been looking for.

Russman,

I am still quite far from reaching the quality bass that I would desire and come to expect from my future professional system. However, for the money spent, I believe I have come as close as possible to achieving deph and accuracy.

The original driver in the psw202 would blend perfectly well with the RT15's, but would sound very inconsistant with the JBL's. This GNX driver has changed that.

For a simple computer rig, this is good enough. I am a bit disappointed with the GNX in terms of how deep it can go. Granted, the encloser and the amp may not be as suitable, it seems to drop off, and actually flutter during the real low notes on bass excursion tests. With my current set-up, I do not believe the gnx is capable of 18 hz at all.

I am very excited about executing the design I have made for a new sub, which is meant to fill a niche in the market, if all goes well. Since I have no degree in enginering and subsequently no idea on the way a sound wave works in certain environments, this will all be going on a hunch. Whether it works or not, it will be an interesting experience nonetheless.

Hbombtoo,

Could always try plugging the ports? Get the gnx12'' ?? heh. I am not sure how this would sound meshed with some seriously good gear. It wouldnt cost much to try, however.. If one day you have some cash to blow and wish to experiment on your sub, that may be something to do.
