View Full Version : Any interest in a DFW Area gathering?

Gadabout
11-29-2009, 04:01 AM
Been awhile since we have had a gathering in the area and I'm finally squared away in the new house (pretty much).

I have 4 systems in the house and we can swap gear in and out of any of them. 2 are in the showcase (http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showcase/view.php?userid=85070)

So I guess the first question is too see if anyone is interested in getting together. I'm in Weatherford, TX (76086) and it will be a bit of a drive for most of you.

The second thing to find out is what date works best for everyone. I'm off work from Dec 19 till Jan 4th. Perhaps not the best time because of the Holidays. Any weekend in January would also work.

So, is any one interested and if so what date works the best for you?

Let's setup a Saturday Scott, it will give me more time to talk you back out of gear I sold you that I shouldn't have.

That, and it makes it easier for peeps to come and go. I'll make sure you have the backing and attendance to make it a hit, you have the gear and the ear, and that's what matters!

Cheers,

Anyone wanting to make the trip is more than welcome.....

How about Jan. 23rd?

Should be a bit of time to recover from the Holidays and also be enough advance notice for those that are traveling to be able to make plans. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate. We can make it an all day thing, just show up when you get here and leave if / when you have too. Say anytime after 11a.

As far as gear goes, bring anything you think the others would like to hear or you would like to show off. I'd also be interested in hearing some of your favorite music too. I'm not on the vinyl bandwagon yet, so I don't have TT. I'll get pictures of the other 2 systems up in the showcase so you can see what gear can be swapped out (not a tube guy either, yet).

I'll have plenty of snacks and soda around, just BYOB. If enough folks show up, we will order in pizza and wings or something or I'll run down to the local BBQ joint and pick up some sandwich fixings (other option would just be to fire up the grill).

Russ has promised to provide some entertainment.
It should be interesting listening, as he tries to talk me into selling back the Audes back to him.

Looking forward to seeing you guys again and meeting the some new polkies.

What weekend is the flea mkt. down there?

Kinda depends on what you mean by down there.....

Here in Weatherford, we have one locally on the Weekend - Friday, Saturday and Sunday before the 1st Monday. So in January it would be the 1st thru the 3rd. (Largest 1st Monday in Texas is in Canton)

Now, if your talking about Traders Village (http://www.tradersvillage.com/en/grandprairie/fleamarket), it's open every Saturday and Sunday.

If you talking about, the computer Sidewalk Sale (http://www.sidewalksale.com/) for electronics, computers and stuff like that. It's the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month.

If you're looking that far out, hell I could even make it from San Antonio. .....

Since it appeared that most folks found it easier to make it to a gathering in Janauary, I decided to give it as much time as I could. Couple folks from Oklahoma and Mississippi had said they might be interested in a road trip.

I was also hoping it would give the folks from San Antonio, Austin and Houston some time to plan if they wanted to come too.

Hope you can make it,

i can bring a few SACDs and a player if there's not gonna be another SACD player in the house

Gadabout
12-16-2009, 01:17 AM
The Marantz in the 2ch system is an SACD player. The Sony in the HT is the CES2000 (same as yours). Your also welcome to bring another if you want to see what differences there might be.

As far as spinning some vinyl, I don't have a turntable. :\

I'm using a TVC (http://www.promitheusaudio.com/tvc.htm) (Transformer Volume Control) as a Preamp in the 2 ch system and I'm unsure if would work as a TT preamp.

Your welcome to bring a preamp (unless the TVC would work), TT and vinyl. I'd never ask someone to transport something that delicate, but would love to hear one sometime.

RuSsMaN

Scott has a pair of EZ as Pie (the Red ones from my Bottlehead meet that I got from Fred), and a pair of Audes Soul - which are fairly efficient also, around 92db iirc.

Just bring it all, I'm going to bring some efficient quirky DIY stuff I've built from spare parts around here. Maybe Scott can have one rig/area setup where we can swap gear in and out......

Gadabout

Yepp.... bring it all. I'm certainly interested in hearing whats out there.

I also have a pair LSi7's that are in the bedroom. In boxes, in the garage (not in use) I have.
- an old Pair of JBL's or JVC's (I forget) but they have 15" woofers in them.
- a pair of Blose 301's.

Russ, are you bringing the VTI rack with you for VC69? The one thing I'm short on is rack space.

It's no big deal, if your not. The Stereo in the guest bedroom is kind of a hodge podge of stuff that I have left over.
- EZ as Pi Speakers
- Sonance Amp
- Onkyo Pre
- Rotel CD player.

We can easily use that rack for swapping components.

Thanks scott that would be cool if it can be fixed. Like I stated its free for whoever wants it im not trying to get it fixed for free. When it did work I had it hooked up to my surrounds R50's. I moved to another place and when I hooked it back up it would pop the fuses both of them. I hooked the surrounds up to my Denon and I cant tell the difference in SQ. I do know a little about electronics and the left side rectifier had an open short I ordered a replacement part and it still pops both fuses when I power it on. Hopefully for the next meeting. Would have been nice to take it out to Mineral Wells, that's for sure but can't spend the money on it right now. You can all help me out to get it running by renting my vacation place: http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=93543 (seriously, the CP rates are ridiculously low, we just want people to start using it and telling their friends)

Yep, it is a professional instrument intended for manufacturers. One of my current job perks as I'm working on developing an audio quality measurement solution (not home audio). You have a dead short in your receiver. This is bad. The crackling you hear is 110 volts arcing inside your receiver. The smoke is from your reciever trying to catch on fire. At a minimum you are going to need parts that won't be available at the meet and may need PCB repair if the board is burnt or traces on the PCB have been burnt in two.

Hey Russ,

Will the VTI rack come apart into enough pieces that I can shoehorn it into my Jetta (big trunk and back seat)?

My ride bailed on me so I am coming by myself but a Jetta is all I have.

Since I am coming from Jackson, I probably wont be there until about 2 pm and I am going to have to hit the road by 5 pm or so.

BTW... would anyone be interested in checking out my Oppo BDP-83 SE modded player? I could bring it along.

Sorry.....

Didn't know the Head-Fi meet was going to be on the same day. Probably could have changed the date had I known sooner.

You still welcome to drop by after the Head Fi meet. You know you want to listen to the EZ as Pi speakers again. Want my address?

Scott
Sure. If I get out of there at a reasonable time, I could head that way.
I wasn't even sure until last night I wasn't working this weekend.
So I didn't really plan anything until just now. There's a prototype Stax amp
at the meet calling out my name, plus there's going to be Senn HD-800's there. Both on my short list of things to do. How late are you staying
open for rowdy polkies?

I'm going to be around all day and there is really no specific end time. No idea how late the guys are staying. I assume thier wives would have something to say on that account. (I don't think most people get a whole day on a weekend free).

I'll PM you the address information. It's got my cell numbers in it. Your welcome to show up anytime.

Should be a good weekend. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you and also seeing / hearing some new equipment.

Scott

PS......

The VTI rack should break down easily. They are usually shipped flat box to wherever they are going when new.

I am working on application to measure amplifier characteristics. I don't know if it will be ready by tomorrow but if you are curious to see how your amplifier measures up, you can bring it tomorrow and I see what I can do.

Things to measure:

gain
frequency response
total harmonic distortion (THD)
modulation distortion of the nth order
difference-frequency distortion of the nth order
dynamic intermodulation distortion (DIM)
noise characteristic

UPV Audio Analyzer

I am tempted to bring in DQ-10's but they might not fit in my car. If anyone is driving by DFW International and has a large vehicle, then they might get there.

Guys,

Sorry if I've been MIA lately. Been working a lot more lately than I had grown accustomed to the prior few years.

I'm not going to be able to make it tomorrow, unfortunately. Have a wedding to attend on the other side of town.

Take lots of pics!

I'm pretty sure I am coming so I guess I'll bring my Classe' CA-200 amp, Audio Experience A1 preamp, and maybe the Jolida integrated I am trying to sell.

I'm rolling solo tomorrow. I am going to pull out of here at 8am so should be near Dallas by 2 pm and Scott's place by 3. I didn't realize it was the other side of FW!

Anyway, wish me luck and I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.

I was getting things together and decided to add to my haul a bunch of cables, a Winsome Labs Mouse amp and a pair of Optimus LX4 speakers (little giant killers).

Hey guys, don't forget to bring MUSIC !

Yes it seems a shame to drive all that way for such a short visit, but hey, a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do.

I'm headed out the door and should be there I'm guessing 12 or 1? I really don't know how long the drive is. My wife is coming with me. No need to worry. She is self sufficient. She has her books, her knitting, her iPhone with games and audio books, plus she can always take the car somewhere. Funny I was loading all the gear and had the car packed when she said where do I put my stuff? What? You're taking stuff? I guess I can take some gear out. :(

Had a great time Scott. Thanks for being a most gracious host, great food, great friends in music. Could those that heard the Virtue Piano 1 cdp please pm me with your thoughts as I would like to include some of the comments in my review. Don't worry I won't use your name.
Loved the small rat shack speakers and the jbl's and almost forgot the Audes speakers.
Scott, you know I'll take those extra speakers off your hands.:D

Great time Scott, thank you for pulling this together. This was a first for me and hopefully we can have another one soon.

It was great to see the people I know and the new ones I met. Fantastic food too.

I picked up at least 8 new artist to listen too and equipment that blew my mind.

The Audes are sweet and if anyone don't believe RTi10s can be great with music I suggest hearing Scotts with the Polk sub. I was shocked at how mellow (non harsh) the highs were and how tight the bass was.

Thanks again Scott !

I also had a great time Scott, and thank you for hosting this. You have a great place and some awesome systems. This was a first for me also and enjoyed meeting everyone. Thanks also to Wardsweb for toting all that stuff from San Antonio. I am impressed with what 1 watt of power can do with the Optimus speakers. I will be looking forward to the next one.

Jeez guys, I hate I missed this. Got near Dallas and Russ text msg'd me that he wouldn't be able to make it to the meetup with the rack. We worked it out, but by the time I met Russ in N. Dallas to get the rack, the day was long. Making the trip out to Scott's place would have been a crazy long drive. So I just headed back to Jackson.

Maybe next time....

Main thing is you got your rack. You did miss a great time, host and people.

Like you said, maybe next time.

Where are all the pics that were taken yesterday, oh yeah, how was the BBQ. I hated to miss that.

Guys,

I had a great time yesterday and it was a pleasure to meet each of you. Some very interesting and cool equipment and lots of ideas. All of them just add to the list of toys I have to have.

Scott thanks for hosting and you have quite the setup. My favorite was the 2 channel room.

Marvin looks like I will be ordering me one of the Virtue CD players (soon). The sound was amazing.

Thanks guys, I had good time. Listening to the gear that was out there made me want to finally put my things in order as well and get my gear hooked up. Wardsweb, was one of your preamps a DIY? I need a simple preamp and can't afford one right now, a cheap DIY preamp is something I am considering doing.

Speaking of DIY, is anyone interested in DIY meeting next time? It seems we have plenty of tech savvy people among us who could show us a thing or two. I'm only good with computer stuff and woodwork, my EE skills are very rusty. For the next meet I think we should plan an agenda.

Thanx guys for making the long sojurn to Weatherford. I had a great time and it was good to put a face with the guys that are local.

The BBQ was OK, a little late on the arrival time (4p) and he forgot to put the pork butt in so no pulled pork.

I took a couple pictures (not as many as Wardsweb), but I'll get them posted in this thread.

Russ....

Your 0 -2. was looking forward to seeing you. Hope things work out better next time.

I'm up for a DIY meet always interested in what is going on and I'm considering starting a couple projects from Bottlehead.
