If I was gonna build a set, what would be the ideal woofers to use? And crossovers too! :D

Why not? I have a wood shop, tools, wood. Just need drivers. I can build them cheaper than buy them! :p Why has Ben built several sets?

Stay away from that nut job Ben. I hear he is even in GA:eek:

Seriously if you are good with wood you can do a better job on the cabinets with ease. You will want to find a polk XO, and use Polk drivers. There is way too much work for me to handle using different drives without some testing equipment. Stop by sometime after the holidays. Maybe we can have a little get together.

Edit:Joe ya beat me to it :p

Ben I would love to stop by sometimes! I rarely make it to Atlanta though.

You don't make the cabinets with wood for starters.

Just need drivers.

Don't forget the passive radiators and good luck finding those.

I can build them cheaper than buy them!

No, you can't.

Why the negativity about building a set of speakers? And wheres the fun in NOT trying? If they are anything like building guitars. I can say without doubt I can build one cheaper than I can buy one. :p

Well MDF, particle board etc. Is that not made from wood products?
I WILL build them from MDF, that I don't have at the moment. Then I WILL cover them in plained down cherry, that I do have at the moment.

Don't forget the passive radiators and good luck finding those.

What's Ben been doing for radiators? Gotta be an equivalent out there somewhere right?

No, you can't.

I am relatively sure that I can build a set cheap than the $2000 set on eBay right now. Figuring in shipping and all.

Not that many DIY'ers here or something?

Try reality.

16 mid-drivers @ $60.00 = $960.00.
8 tweeters @ $48.00 = $384.00.
2 passive radiators (if you can even find them), shall we say $200.00.
2 complete new crossovers, shall we say $400.00 using the cheap stuff.
Assorted wire, binding posts and cups, shall we say $150.00 using the cheap stuff.

The total so far is $2094.00 without figuring in shipping and all.

I'll venture to say he is thinking about building the single tweeter dual drive 2a/b style SDA. I am guessing maybe a grand when all is said and done.
No one means to piss on your parade just give you a little insight.

Yeah my reality? Dude, from the beginning of this thread, I never said I wanted to build the top of the line SDA model. You assumed that!

What version of SDA is on ebay for $2000? I would assume they are SDA/SRSs on up. That being said what Jesse wrote as far as the cost of JUST the components without the cabinet, wires, connectors and grill cloth is right on the money.

There is no negativity here just honest answers to your questions.

Geez, I didn't mean to step on any toes here. Can a mod delete this thread or something?

Easy there big fella. You are not stepping on anyones toes and no need to have the thread deleted. Keep it going and be more specific as to what SDA version you want to build.

^ My apologies. All I asked was what drivers and XO's to use in my initial post in this thread. Never dreamed it would leed to this.

No specific model, just wanted info on what drivers is all.

No apologies needed.

In post ten Jesse gives pretty accurate prices on the drivers and XOs. It's not impossible to find the original passive radiators but is very difficult. Ben could give you an idea on what he spent on the alternative PRs.

Thanks! I will ask Ben what drivers to use.

I assmued nothing, dude.

No specific model, just wanted info on what drivers is all.

There are 6 different mid-drivers used on the various models and often 2 different mid-drivers are used on the same model. So, now that you don't want to build the TOTL model, which one would you like to build?

One thing is for sure you will not save money by building your own. What you will get is SDA's in a real nice cabinet if you can do the job right. It's a labor of love for me.
