I really want to have a Seattle Meet. I would love to see some SRTs, or some SRAs. Would love to talk to anyone within the area that is stocked about HT or polks. Anyone out there?
Would love some help tuning my setup. Here is a build I just posted.

Hi and welcome to club Polk. The names AL. Looks like you got a plan in place for a nice HT. I would love to hear your system as is. Sorry but I'm across the state. There are some Seattle area people in here too though. I am not planning any trips to the Seattle area any time soon. Maybe next spring you and I could meet up and I could see and hear your HT.
Not sure about your amps.. but are they pro sound amps? It's usually best to stick with home audio amps and components though... at least that's what i've always been told.
Ask any questions you have.. you'll learn a lot here... oh yeah.. I think you meant SDA's. ;)
Tonysfester
12-17-2009, 03:40 AM
Doh, yea I did mean SDA's. The Gemsounds are ultra cheap and not what I ideally wanted. They are excellent and provide good response down to about 20hz along with the sub in 6.5cuft. I am happy for the price. I have no complaints as they rattle the house well. The Behringer is a popular HT amp, perform a search over on AVS forum and they are a popular choice for good reason. The properly power the LS-90s.
I would love to meet with some Seattle HT enthusiasts. This is my first build so I know I have a lot to learn.

Hey Tony, the name's Jeff. Me and Al are very close (geographically speaking, lol) I too am on the other side of the state, at Fairchild AFB. Like Al said, looks like you are well on your way to having a killer HT, and there are some Seattle Polkies here, give em time to get back to you. Welcome to Club Polk.

Hi Tony, I am KC. Funny enough, Cameron and I were just talkin about that we needed to have a Seattle area Polk get together. We need to find someone who has some SDA's :) as I have not heard them either...course maybe I don't want to hear them, cuz then I will want some of those too.:p
We were thinkin some time after the holidays. We'll see what others have to say. I am up in Edmonds, where are you?
Tonysfester
12-17-2009, 02:31 PM
Nice ta meet ya. I am located down in Renton. Doesn't really matter to me where we go. I would prefer after the holidays as well. I would just love to figure out how to tune a room with an spl meter, pink noise etc. I just feel as though I need to expand my knowledge and at the same time meet some audio buffs. Dont really have any friends that are into it so I am alone on the subject.

Welcome Tony! Shoot my a PM when you get a high enough post count and let's set up a date for after Christmas. I live in Issaquah and can bring my AVIA set-up disc, SPL meter, etc and give you a hand with your HT.
As for a Seattle-fest, I would totally support it and do some ground work if needed, and if we could find someplace suitable. I don't think my 1300 sq/ft apt would be quiet suitable.

Let me look into using our 800 sq/ft movie theater room at work in Kirkland. It would be a great place to meet, and it even has 20a outlets, but there might be a rental fee for outside events...

Hi,
I would be willing to host a gathering at my place. It would need to be later in January. Al and Zingo have been over before and I have been to Cameron's place to listen to some tunes. I dont have a tv in the mancave but have a pair of srs 2.3s that sound great. I have to have the bathroom remodel done before it could happen here though. Sorry Tony, not much in the way of a HT at my place.

We can meet at my work in downtown Kirkland if everyone wants. I'm the GM in training at a one year old retirement community, and we have a +/- 800 sq/ft movie theater with in-walls, blu-ray, etc. Its seating is all single chairs, so it can be adjusted to number of people, tables, gear, etc. There would be no charge if we wanted to use the room and equipment for a day or evening. I know it's not as convenient as someones house, but if a few people want to bring some gear, me included, we could do some fun listening as well as watch a blu-ray or two. Input?

one suggestion for listening to different rigs... listen to only one rig at a time.

Yup, Sunday Feb 21 from 1-6pm is official. If you guys want to do a catered dinner for a small amount, I can have our chef put something together based upon input (burgers, sandwiches, stir-fry, whatever). I can probably provide some snacks and drinks for the afternoon. :)

Hey Ryan,
I am thinking about going to the meet (assuming this is OK with everyone) and was wondering if we could car pool (I live in Salem). i could drive up to where you are and go from there. Would that be OK? It's fine if this is a problem. I will see if I will actually be able to go though as things are up in the air at this point. Oh, and I could bring my Aragon 8008bb amp to add to the fray.

That looks like about 100 other cabinets with X brand drivers in them that you can become a distributor for at CES, from 50 different vendors. I'm suprised it took ED this long to figure all that out. Don't they have a pretty bad reputation in regards to customer support already? Just asking, based on what I've read historically from place to place. No slight on you Zingo but that's a brand I hope you get into cheap and don't expect a return on.

We are gonna make a weekend out of it and we plan on rolling in to town on Friday and leaving on Monday. I still need to get my leave approved, since I am on a Medical restriction I am not supposed to leave the local area, but it shouldn't be too hard to get it approved. I am looking forward to meeting you guys and I can bring anything in my sig (minus the TV of course, lol) Also I may have the TSi 500's on loan by then and if it is ok with Mark/Polk I can bring those as well. That's 2 buildings from my work. You won't find any beer and burgers around there, except maybe the Comfort Inn lounge. I'm told they have decent appetizers.
Plenty of places to eat (fast-food and sit-down) 1 exit north. Head downtown Bothell (not that far from Comfort) for the beers - Main Street Ale House is one option. Best burger in Bothell would be Ranch Drive-In in downtown Bothell IMHO. I can recommend more as needed.

There hasn't been a lot of discussion about what speakers are going to be there. My gear is pretty mid-fi at best. I have LS50's and RTA8t's I could bring if anyone is interested in hearing them. Also have an SVS 25-31PC+. I just don't want to haul it all up if it will be redundant or un-needed.

I know Geoff is bringing his SDA 2A's. other than that.. haven't heard to much about other speakers people are brining. I think though that Jeff from Spokane (wutadumsn23) is bringing the TSi500 towers that have been making the demo rounds. And I am bringing the PSW225i wireless subwoofer to hand over to Jeff.. that will be available for demo too.
I have never heard those and am quite interested in hearing them. they are decent sized towers with 4 mids and silk tweeter I think.

I thought I would make up a list of speakers I have and somebody can chime in if you want to hear them: ( I "Starred" the ones I was planning on bringing, so far)

Mon 7c's w/ SL2000, unmodded
Mon 10b's w/ SL1000, unmodded, but I think I got some of the 'good' SL1000's cuz they are soundin sweeet.
Mon 5jr w/ SL2000's, unmodded, & they are the early one without the PR's
RTA-8TL's, unmodded.
VS-25's, un-modded except Mortite & lil dampin
CSi5, unmodded
**RT55i's, unmodded, mostly, except Mortite & (lil dampin in one for comparision)

I think Cameron said he CAN bring any of his stuff as well.

LOL, Jeff here reporting that I am bringing pretty much my whole HT. Everything in my sig (minus the TV of course) will be making the trip as well as the TSi 500's that Al mentioned I was bringing. I know it is probably too much, but I love my gear and want to "show it off" I know it is pretty much entry level stuff, but if there isn't room for it, I can bring it in a little at a time, lol. I wanted to bring the Monitor 70's and the TSi 500's for a little side by side to help me with my review since I don't have the seasoned ears that most of you guys have, lol. Looking forward to this meet, it should be a good time.

That's me. I'll be there (I'll wear a nametag to forestall confusion!!:)). Unfortunately, I don't have any equipment to contribute. All of my Polk speakers have left the house to go to other owners, and my other speaker projects aren't anywhere near completed. I suppose packing up my main McIntosh/Magnepan/Rythmik system to bring is not really feasible. So I guess I'll just bring a smile and some conversation.

Please PM me if anyone needs the address or my phone number.
If anyone gets a little lost in downtown Kirkland, we are the building east of the big construction crane, just two blocks from the water. When you pull up to the front of the building, keep driving past the front doors into our parking garage. DO NOT park in the blue striped parking stalls as they are city parking and only two hours. Park in the stalls with the brown visitor parking signs. You'll come in the main doors on the front of the building, and I have a couple carts if you need to use them for equipment. The theater is on the second floor to the right of the elevators. Make sure you sign in at the front desk as we are a retirement community, and I'm expecting everyone to be on their best behavior. Any questions?

The passive pre and adcom 535 with the monitor 5 setup was the star of the show. The raffle prizes were great. Thanks AL and Polk Audio for the extra icing on the cake. Well, now I'm kind of motivated to get ahold of another set of Polk Audio's and fix them up for next year's get-together. I wish I'd had something to bring this time. I didn't realize how much I missed my Monitor 5's.

The Inaugural Seattle GTG was a great time. First thanks go out to Jake for setting up the venue.
It was fun to get to hear a bunch of gear at the same time.
Cables really do make a difference....it was the rallying cry...LOL
I loved finally getting to hear some SDA was great. Jeff's DAC and transport are just plain beautiful ...AND sound amazing. Jake's integrated amp was a beast...and Cameron's 5b were great sounding. It was great being able to hear a whole bunch of gear in one place.....
The kicker was the raffles...but I am not going to 'pop the balloon' until the winner announced it...but all I'll say is Polk is a very generous bunch of people....
And, Yes Russ kept his pants on the whole time...
When's the next one???

Thanks, Kelvin. I was wishing you could have come. The -1C's are still plugging away, I take it?
They are highly treasured bringers of much pleasure and are practically shrined. After reading about and seeing pictures of many different SDA-1C's and the various mods, I'm fully convinced the ones you built are the absolute best example of this particular model on the planet. No other pair that I've heard of has undergone the total transformation with such meticulous attention to detail in every aspect. I think Sal has a pair of SDA'a that may have been as lovingly restored but they aren't 1C's. I feel privledged to give them a home and can't imagine ever selling them.
It would have been really nice to be there especially when it was so close. I am going to initiate the obtaining of a passport as soon as my tax refund comes and I have enough money to pay for the various police checks pardons and passport documents. I haven't been in any trouble in over 20 years so it shouldn't be difficult. Perhaps the next meet. I could bring the 1C's and show people the fine work you've done. Sounds like a good time was had by all.
Just out of curiosity Geoff, what are you running now? Still have the Maggies?

I do. Here they are, in this thread at audiokarma. Post number 41.
http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=275614&highlight=pictures+magnepans&page=3
They have several upgrades planned right now. And I have a couple of amplifiers on the way to do a vertical bi-amp setup, all actively crossed with Bryston crossovers. That will give 6 total channels of amplification (High panel, low panel, and sub plate amp on each side). The rack is going to get some work, and hopefully in 6 or 8 months I will have it all together after 3 years of saving, buying, and tweaking. Then I can rest for, oh, maybe a day, before starting on something else.
And now I'm thinking about what I can do for the next meet. I have a pair of Monitor 5's that i'm doing for a friend that I should have some pictures of in 3 or 4 weeks. But for the next meet, I'd like to either have another pair of Polk's (hopefully with some radical TLC, just for fun), or one of my pair's of Infinity's (which I really need to get working on). Maybe the (heavily modded) RS-IIIa's. I felt bad not bringing anything this time.
I'm glad you like the -1C's still. With the new mid-bass drivers, tweeters, and capacitors, they should be healthy for a long long time. Those were the first speakers I ever worked on, and it's just been an avalanche of reading, learning, experimenting, and working and since then. Kind of like drinking water from a firehose. The most enjoyable hobby I've ever gotten involved in, I think. And am meeting a lot of neat people along the way....
If you're interested, I'll send you some of the plans I have for future DIY speaker systems (some modifications and some from the ground up). You know, just in case you want to upgrade from the -1C's. :p

Wow, where to start. What a great time this was, best 850 miles I have put on my truck since I bought it (roundtrip of course, lol) I was a bit timid going into this because I have very little experience here and in the audio world in general. Had never heard a set of SDA's and wow, I wish I hadn't, lol. As stated in a previous post the Monitor 5's stole the show. Even my wife said "that's just those little speakers playing?" they were amazing. The 10's were great as well, as were the LS50's. All I brought was my Monitor 70's and the now MINE TSi 500's, but we'll get to that later, lol. I had never done any "serious" 2 chan listening with my 70's and I must say after hooking them up to that amp, and a buffer they sounded very good, IMHO. The TSi's also impressed in this area as well. My PSW125 was used as "oompf" when needed and did a pretty good job, eventhough it is more of a HT sub IMHO. That amp that we used was a BEAST, wow I had some ideas for my naughty bits as well, lol. I am still in shock that I walked away with a $700 pair of TSi 500's, I don't even have words to express my gratitude to Al, Mark and Polk Audio. I just happened to bring them with me because I was demoing them and knew that some of the guys hadn't heard some of Polks newer speakers, then to walk away with them, unbelievable. My wife was out in the hallway at the time and she was like wtf is going on in there, strippers? LOL. I learned a lot and met some really cool guys there. Thanks to Jake for putting it together and all the guys for treating me and my wife like one of the crew, she was very impressed with you guys and can't wait to have a little get together of our own soon before moving to Germany. Dinner with Al and Russ and (sorry Al, forgot your friends name) was a blast and let me tell you Al and Russ are some stand up guys (just don't tell Russ I said so, or he will kill me, lol) Thought I had blown a tweeter there on my 70's but as the joke earlier had stated, I just had some loose nuts, lol. Thanks again for the awesome time and taking in this newbie and treating me and my wife like you guys did. Glad you all arrived home safe and sound (esp Russ) how did your 11 O'clock plans work out? LOL Thanks again to Al, Mark and Polk Audio for the extremely generous gift of the TSi 500's, after that event I realized how much I am missing being a strictly HT guy, and plan on starting up a 2 ch rig with the 500's. Hopefully do this again soon, if I don't make it to Germany.

Hey Jeff, Now you have to change your signiture :D
Congrats Again...
Al,
Here is a link to the buffer I had, that you were asking about.
Like I said, it is the Grant Fidelity B-283, and also the new one that GF just introduced, the B-283 MKII. To be honest, if I had the extra $65 I would probably would go for the B-283 MKII. It uses the 6SN7 tube, which I have been told is better, and has many more options available. (H9 mentioned it) They had not yet released it when I got mine.
FYI: If you do the VIP membership, $2.99, first, you then get lower price (green prices)
The GF B-283
http://grantfidelity.com/site/B-283+Tube+Processor+Buffer
The GF B-283 MKII
http://grantfidelity.com/site/Grant_Fidelity_B283_MKII_tube_processor_buffer
Here is a snip of comparison from GF webpage: (comparing the two)
Compared to the 6J1 version, it offers you more refined sound and works better with mid or high price range solid state system, plus you have endless list of 6SN7 current production and NOS tubes to roll for different sound. If you have a budget sub $1000 system, the original B283 would be sufficient. If you would like to explore more about tube hi-fi and tube rolling, the B283 MKII is a perfect small investment for you to venture into tube audio and learn all about tube rolling.

LOL, already changed it, trying to put together a 2 ch rig with them.
That buffer was awesome, it really made my 70's shine when we had em up in 2 ch mode, that will be on my list for my 2 ch rig in progress.

Looks like you guys had a great time. And no pictures of Russ sleeping in the kitchen/bathroom/closet/laundry room? Wow, I'm impressed. And he does look sharp....I wonder what changed him ;)

Thanks Ricardo, I'm still in shock, lol. It was a great time, my wife even enjoyed herself, lol. Russ was on his best behavior and was a really cool guy. As were the rest of the guys and I plan on having Al over to the house soon, I should have my new 65" Panny plasma by then!!

The "Beast"
a stunning looking and sounding Jungson JA-88 80wpc class A brute of an integrated amp. with the coolest blue light that doubles as a lighthouse to signal ships in Puget Sound during the those nights when the fog is to thick :p
seriously, this thing would be more than welcome in my house any time. love the analog VU meters. :D
You should have seen the look of disgust on Jake's face when he caught me rubbing my naughty bits on his amp  :p
Holy crap that thing is awesome.

It really was quite a piece of equipment, sounded as good as it looked too. Even my wife was like "why don't we have one of those?" She mostly liked the pretty blue lights though, but if that's what it takes, lol.

Had a great time as well. Although it is true that Russ had pants on the whole time, we did find out that somebody had loose nuts!
Thanks to Jake for offering the place and the food. Thanks to Polk for the generosity.
Good to see some familiar faces again, and good to meet everyone else. Let's not wait so long to do it again.
Can someone please put names to all the faces? I know a few people but its nice to know who everyone is.

Hopefully I won't screw this up, lol. I have a terrible memory and I totally forgot the guy on the left, but he was really nice and had a really nice camera, lol. (sorry) From Left to Right in the picture in post #212(excluding the first guy) Cameron (cambir) Jake (zingo) Jeff (wutadumsn23) Al's friend Roger (not a member) Russ (lightman1) Al (dangerboy) Jeff (bikerboy) Ken (ken brydson) and Geoff (geoff727) Hopefully I got them right, lol. Great bunch of guys and it was a great time. Also, the pretty lady in a few of the pics. is my better half Rosie, she came to make sure there was no "adult entertainment", lol and actually ended up having a good time.
