LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- "The Matrix" sequels are coming to a big and bigger screen near you.

Large-screen theater operator IMAX said Wednesday that Warner Bros. Pictures and producer Village Roadshow's upcoming "Matrix" films, "The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolutions," will be released on IMAX's 15 frames-per-second/70mm screen format to accompany the standard theatrical releases debuting this year.

Using Imax's new Digital Re-mastering (DMR) technology that allows 35mm films to be transferred to the larger format without compromising quality, the Imax version of Andy and Larry Wachowski's "The Matrix Reloaded" will open two to three weeks after the film's May 15 release in 35mm. Warner Bros. Pictures president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said Warners is looking at June 6 for the Imax release. The IMAX version of "The Matrix Revolutions" will bow day and date with the film's November 5 theatrical release, marking the first time a Hollywood event film is released concurrently in both formats.

IMAX screens have an AR close to 1.80:1 (not sure of the exact) vr. the 2.35:1 that the Matrix will be. It may be tall, but you'll get cropping on the edges or a super streched image so the film fits the screen.

Kallay- Why wasn't the original widescreen aspect ratio of 2.40:1 utilized for the IMAX version of "Attack of the Clones"?

Ward- We looked at a number of different aspect ratios, to be honest, and it seemed like 1.81:1 was the best balance of optimizing the size. We said, "Look, if we're going to do this, we want it to be as big as possible, while at the same time, balance the images on the screen and make sure we could maximize that without having to get too dramatic on a pan-and-scan basis."

Kallay- Are there any noticeable shots in the film that you recall that were pan-and-scanned?

Ward- We used the pan-and-scan version of the DVD as sort of a guideline.

Using the Pan-n-Scan DVD as a guideline for the IMAX screen??? Unbelievable! Why would anyone want to go to a theater, pay $10 for a near Pan-n-Scan movie?

I still cannot figure out what is so exciting about an IMAX movie, it's not that impressive.

Pan-n-scanning a movie like the Matrix should be an unforgivable sin.

Does Dallas or San Antonio on the list for this? Do you have the list of the city that suppose to have the IMAX theaters to carry this movie?

Ron, have you ever sit in one of the Imax movie before? To me, action movie like Matrix, with all of the bullets flying around, to experience all of these in the IMAX theater, it will knock the hec*k out of you. I have seen in one of this theater in Orlando, the screen is actually 13 stories high with six automated projectors running at the same time and control by a computer system, flying in to the space with all the asteroid pieces coming at you and the monster is chasing you from the back, I didn't feel anything from my knee down to my toes. Shi*t man, I go watch the Matrix anytime in the IMAX theater.

Yep Peterng, been there done that several times. The sound is better than the average multi-plex but is equal to that at my favorite, The BIG Newport with the largest screen on the Westcoast....and they don't need to crop up the film to fit the screen.
