Small drill hole through jewel case and tray insert on back

I don't get that--why on earth would anybody do that?
And why doesn't the seller replace the case?

Is it really that rare? or is the guy off his rocker? (I'm thinking the latter)

It is the only known copy of this album on SACD.

First off, let me say that anyone who pays this amount is insane (even more insane that the guy selling it for that price).

Typically the reason the drill hole is put into the CD case is because it's a promotional copy of the CD. Ususally, it's throught the SKU though, so I don't know why this has it where it is.

Didn't someone on here say they had a SACD copy of "Rocks" about a week ago?? I think the seller is full of sh*t.

I've paid some crazy $$$ for an used CD myself, but....$12.5K for a SACD? I mean, that would be a very good down payment on a new car.

Maybe they'll play it live for $12.5K at the next PolkFest if we all chip in. :)

I'll bet you could find out their booking price. I feel certain it's a tad higher than 12.5k ;)

I know they aren't playing Vegas yet, but they aren't getting any younger.

Maybe by next PolkFest . . . :)

I was more posting that for the listing saying:

"This item has been discontinued by the manufacturer."

They list a SN for the item.

Gotcha.

IIRC, they also had/have a listing for "In The Court Of The Crimson King" on SACD, which never happened. However, it recently happened on DVD-A, a year after that format died.

I swear I've seen a DVD-A version of this. Which when you consider the source material is going to be tape, there's no benefit to DSD.

These days, no. Just about everything is digital.

You would be completely wrong on that one.

Nice thing about having a friend that owns a studio is that I get to play with a lot of really cool gear and have well-informed opinions. DSD wins hands-down on live recordings that have pretty much zero post-processing. Kinda like live cut vinyl. Outside of that there's pretty much no advantage to DSD vs PCM- and we spent a lot of time playing with it... Including pulling some old recordings off tape. The biggest issue with DSD is that it's a bitch to edit: apart from live recordings, most SACD's are recorded in PCM then converted to DSD for mastering, nullifying any advantage of the format.

Now, your listening tastes could mean that you're hearing the SACD's that are cut live, in which case, yeah they sound better. But for a multitracked rock album, SACD is typically at a disadvantage simply because the studio is going to do all the mixing in PCM then convert to SACD.

damn it.... stumped my toe as ran for my cd collection to find .... alas ... I don't have one........IF it's as rare as "he" thinks .....hope he sells it ...... but for 12.5 k ... who knows, he just might . That's pocket change for some..

cool factor ... way high

Don't make it up that way much since my brother moved, but if you're down in Durham and the studio is open, we can play with some gear & you'll see what I mean.

Actually, I should qualify what I've said- I'm not really talking about DVD-A and SACD, but rather high-res PCM and DSD, in a studio, on a badass system, in a room with damn near perfect acoustics and no discs involved. The implementation of each system's playback probably greatly impacts it's quality, so it could be that they haven't yet built a DVD-A player that can compete with the SACD players on the market.

I can't find it as anything but a rapidshare download & the catalog number on that pic is the same as the quad SQ LP...

That's kinda funny.....one of my brothers use to live in your area, but since he moved I haven't been back. :)

I thought we were talking about Redbook PCM vs DSD SACD.

Ah- yeah, no contest there. My original post was referring to that DVD-A of Rocks that I'd seen vs the SACD... which in this case would also be no contest (see below).

Anyhow, in the studio we did find that you didn't need full 192khz PCM to not be able to tell it from DSD, but that line was fuzzy depending on what we were recording and how we were processing it.

Heh- should have read the fine print. It's a high-res rip of the SQ LP. Oops. Crazy thing is that I actually saw this on a disc in a fleamarket somewhere.

You touched on an important fact. Regardless of the final format, the mastering matters the most.

I must have been hallucinating as I have been unable to find it. Believe me I have looked since discussion began. :o

All I remember is that it was when I was purchasing "Toys" on SACD and I may just have seen some kind of "TBA" or some such listing for it. I'm getting old.

I think it would be funny that after the buyer pays and receives it, that in a couple of months the SACD got a full release date. I would LMFAO:cool:

Not that it will see the light of day.

That wouldn't be surprising since something similar like that has happened before. I mean, if there's one "Rocks" SACD, there has to be others.
