UPS delivered them a little over an hour ago... I wrestled them inside (damn UPS driver has longer arms than me and was able to bear hug them - my arms aren't that long and I had to kind of duck walk them in). Unpacked them (two separate dealers - one double boxed from 6th ave, the other box from Electronics Expo looked pretty rough). I set up the speakers where the Monitor 70s had sat - bi-amping off the Newcastle like I had with the Monitors... Ran setup then tweaked with the spl... put a Gipsy Kings cd in the Marantz cd5003 on pure direct followed by Tori Amos, followed by Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata and all I can say so far is.......

WOW!!!!!!!!! I love these speakers!! My God, bass!!! :D :D

Okay..... The right speaker from Electronic Expo came minus feet. I kind of wondered if this speaker hadn't been on the floor considering it was their last one and was almost $250 cheaper than new other places. It had everything else and looks brand new, but the box it came in looked like it had been HALO dropped into a dump. Ill call Polk about feet tomorrow.

PSOVLSK & TouchOfEvil - I read with interest about the mod.... Looks simple enough, especially since my covers aren't difficult to remove. But of course It feel kind of blasphemous doing that before I'd even let the current speakers break in. The floor spikes I'll get tomorrow- thanks for the good info!

Hi,
Very interesting Upgrade ...
Have a comparison of the specifications of the two speakers (the original and DB840).
Thank you.

Actually, the current price level of LSi15 is about half of the street price in 2002. I bought mine significantly more than what they are offering them today.

I guess what I am saying is, this is the best time to get your hands on them. :)

Btw, CONGRATS HOLT! give it some good hours to burn them in, you'll be even more impressed!

Enjoy the new speakers and save the mods for a later date when you feel the need to upgrade, tweak, etc. I had mine for a few years before I did anything to them and now I'm enjoying them all over again.

I've had LSi fever ever since I first got my ears on them a couple months ago. I've only heard the 9's, but I was blown away by them. I'd love to compare them to the 15's sometime.

Either way, a pair of LSi9's are going to be the next speakers that I buy.

Congrats. I have really enjoyed mine. I find them particularly good for stringed instruments but they are good for everything.
Be careful of placement. They don't like to be blocked on the outside. Allow at least a couple of feet, if you can.

the LSi15's and 9's are speakers I will die with.....I've heard way pricier speakers that I like less. I had SDA 2B's and 1B's.....I like the LSi's better. just my .02 and obviously that si subjective.

LSi's will obviously have a strong presence at this years Polkfest.

Get your ears on any SDA-1c's or above... Don't get me wrong on The LSi15's as they are a great speaker, but the soundstage, imaging and presence the SDA's provide is far better IMHO than anything Polk has done since.

I wasn't able to find anything on the original woofer of the LSi. Any specs I found were for the speaker as a whole. Both are 4 ohm and both seem to measure down to around 30Hz.

I can't decide if I agree or not. I don't know if I'd call the 1C's better, but definitely different. One of these days I'm going to A/B mine in the same room on the same equipment and see if I can make a final decision. I do agree that the soundstage, imaging, and presence of the 1C is better, but there's just something about the 15's that are better than the 1C's. Maybe it's the overall clarity.

^^^ clarity perhaps. It was not until I played my 15's with the 600x2 that they came to life. I agree they are a very good speaker, but it takes a pretty STRONG amp to get them to open up enough for all the detail to emerge from them.

Definitely agree with this. Unless of course my amp is not considered strong. In that case, I really need to hear them correctly powered because I think mine sound great;).

This was my biggest fear on buying these speakers... That I wouldn't be able to discern a move up in SQ because I didn't have enough amp power and I would have to scramble to find a more powerful used one that wouldn't break the bank. I was very relieved that I did hear a big difference. Thing is, they still need breaking in time and I don't even have them on floor spikes yet (ordered a pair from the link that PSOVLSK kindly provided and are due in today) so I'm still looking to get more improvements. I believe what people say in regards to power, but I also believe what they say in regards to quality as being more important, and now that I feel I have some breathing room to wait for a good used quality amp that I can afford, I feel so much better about buying these speakers. I have good imaging (Tori Amos is singing to me right in front of me with the musicians spread out around her) and good detail, but that and the bass will get even better when I get them off the floor and put break in some break in time this weekend. In a year, I will get an upgrade as far as an amp when I have the money saved up and I probably will do the woofer upgrade as described here as well. Right now, I'm very happy with these speakers and feel each upgrade after this will be more of a pleasant surprise and not an urgent need.

How can you prefer one over the other if you have not tried them both?
Also Polk specs say the 15's play down much further than they really do.

Very easy, PolkAudio is the manufacturer. They designed the LSi series after years of experience. That's more than enough argument.

Upgrading the crossover? YES, only if the manufacturer does. Why experiment? I am no audio engineer. That is the work of experts.
