I find myself buying at least 4 or 5 cd's a week "sometimes less". Just wondering how many other people buy or order.

I usually go to a local discount store about once a month and pickup about 10 CDs. I was bored tonight and ordered 5 online via amazon.

Generally 2-3, but sometimes more, and sometimes none at all.

I also buy a lot of box sets...which can be anywhere from 3-10 CD's...so I don't know what category that would fall into exactly.

I go in bursts too. Sometimes I'll order 4 or 5 at once, but then will go several weeks without purchasing anything. Lately I've been downloading dozens of Floyd and Zeppelin shows from the 70s, which is much easier on the wallet ;)

I voted that I barely buy CDs. However, I was buying one to two CDs a month not including several SACDs per month when I was a member of Yourmusic.com. Alas finances prohibit this practice at the time.

I have however purchased 25, 50 up to 100 LPs a month but again, finances prohibit this practice at the time. GG was my main source and I get an ache in my heart not being able to help out the Glithen's Center. Hopefully the financial situation will improve and I'll be able to go back to my music purchases as well as my obsessive gear upgrades.

Log me in as rarely buying CD's...mostly because I have all I need, not because I don't use them :)

You should add downloading to the poll.

If it ain't on VINYL I don't want it. I might buy 2 or three cd's a year.

I didn't vote, b/c i don't consider myself someone who rarely picks up CDs especially since i've gotten into audio in the last 6 months , but I get 2 or 3 new ones a month

I forgot to mention the two or three CDs a month I used to purchase from Mapleshade Records. I wish Pierre' sold LPs as his CDs are extraordinary and would imagine if he had a vinyl press they would too.

His CDs are outstanding. Best I have ever heard. Maybe someday I will do a Karma thing and give mine away. While the recording is stellar, most that I have purchased do not have many, if any, songs I care to listen to more than the inital time.

His last catalog said he was going to be getting into vinyl. Although I will NEVER go back to that medium, if I did I would buy his turntable with upgrade package. At only $4K it is probably a great audio bargin.

I've done a couple of karmas to spread the good news about Mapleshade's CDs.

I must have missed the "getting back into vinyl" quote in the last catalog. I find this very exciting.

Why won't you consider going back to vinyl?

I can't really answer this poll since there's no option for my situation. I buy a CD whenever an artist I like releases an album. There's no real formula to how many I buy in a week could be several....could be none. I used to blind buy a lot when my local mom and pop record store was still in business and discovered a lot of great bands that way, but they're long gone now. I visit a lot of music blogs now and sample some of the music that way. If it's any good and I'll listen to it I go out and support them by buying their albums

Nearest one on the horizon is the new Band of Horses album coming in May.

Almost never. Unless something is good at Goodwill. I bought 30 cds there once, all classical for $.90 a cd once though.

John, just curious...Do you have any SACD's, or an SACD player? If so, hearing some SACD's may change that thought a bit.;)

I tend to vastly prefer vinyl to redbook CD's, but nothing can touch SACD's for SQ in my experience.

Seriously...If you haven't experienced SACD yet, you really need to! SACD's sound best when being piped through SDA's too, of course.:)

I rarely buy redbook CDs. I tend to rip my own from vinyl. I will buy SACD titles when it's something I like, but those are few and far between on the weekly basis.

I rarely buy CDs anymore. I only buy when something that I consider worthwile comes out, which in the past 7 years is very very rare.

10-12 a week or thereabouts. Rarely less, but sometimes more.

SACDs sound great. I would put SACD on a par with vinyl. They both sound awesome but different. There still isn't anything that compares to the vinyl sound. IMHO, the big difference between SACD and vinyl is that SACD presents more weight to the music but lacks the open, airyness of vinyl.:)

Without the snap, crackle and pop but with mo' better natural, flowing and complete bass.

I don't suffer the snap, crackle or pop except with very old, very played out records, of which I usually buy a new one if I love the music. Keeping the records clean and stored properly usually keeps the noise to a minimum.

I love the music.I agree.

Oh yeah, 30 a month to 0 a month. Finances, listening time, new recommendations and life dictates. Personally, I'm all over the map when it comes to how many CD's I purchase in any given time.

They sound fantastic, but for the cost per disc vs. vinyl. vinyl wins every time. The other thing is it gets my fat lazy ass off the sofa to flip the record.:D

. . . not to mention it forces you to listen to every track per side thus enabling you to enjoy some cuts that you would normally just skip over with the conveniece of CD/SACD and realize what you have been missing by skipping those tracks.

At any one time during the week, I have at least 2 to 3 CDs in transit to me by FedEx, USPS, or other carriers.

On the other hand, I hardly buy new CDs at brick-and-mortar stores. Used CDs at my local music store....yes, but I hardly ever buy any CD from Walmart/Target/Best Buy.

bigaudiofanatic

I usually buy from fye because they have them for 10 bucks each. Once in a while walmart but if I can I like to use amazon.

.... downloads have put pressure on CD sales.

bigaudiofanatic
03-13-2010, 01:22 PM
Define downloads? If you mean the illegal kind I do not even count them as yes they do take away from cd sales but the quality of the music is crap. If you are talking about like itunes and amazon yes even more so than they use to be.

i cant remember the last cd i bought. crazy thats how long its been

bigaudiofanatic
03-14-2010, 11:36 PM
On the other hand, I suspect a large percentage illegal downloads are for music no one would bother to buy in the first place, but since it is free why not get it. I know that was the way it was for me with Napster. I heard lots of songs I would have never bought.

With Amazon, iTunes, etc. the record companies are making money without the overhead of manufacturing disks, packaging, shipping, etc. So, while perhaps the sales of physical media is decreasing, music sales are most likely increasing.

I think a lot of illegal downloading is still done for songs that have not been released yet or from people who just do not want to spend a dime.

As for those buying music offline they still are missing one crucial part, compression that they are getting with the music they buy. Honestly if itunes would start providing lossless music to download I MIGHT just download them but on the other hand I still like having my cd's

You should add downloading to the poll.

You MUST add downloading (in some form) to the poll to get a true feel. I haven't purchased an actual CD (jewel case etc) in quite some time.

The only time I buy one...is if I'm on the road or at work...see one that looks interesting for the ride home...and impulse buy. Other than that...never.

I just fill up hard drive after hard drive of live, legal, lossless music. All free...all sanctioned by the bands...all lossless. I'm starting on my 2nd 1TB external at the moment

The question does not pertain to downloading. I am just wanting to know about people who buy cd's.

1-2. There's an FYE about a mile away and people are dumping cds left and right these days. Since it's the only remaining used shop around here, I try to hit it up once a week or so and usually come home with a couple of cds; sometimes more and sometimes I leave empty handed.
