What would happen if...

Hi all...

I am home and have my new Odyssey Stratus dual mono amp - 65 lbs. I have only one choice in the current state of where to put it - which is on top of a three shelf - Bell'oggetti glass equipment stand. It seems sturdy, and was able to put a 35lb. tube amp on a smaller shelf. I'm just curious what would happen if I put the 65 lb. amp on top and it can't support it? I don't know the model number, and looked online for over an hour looking for it and can'at find it. So, i don't know if it can technically handle the weight. Would the glass shatter? I have lots of expensive gear underneath it. I did put it up on top for like 45 seconds, and got nervous. I'm not sure there's much else I can do in the current situation. Any tips?

My Stratos amps rest on a 3/8" or so thick glass shelf that is tempered - no issues as of yet.

I would not put a 65 lb amp on the top shelf of a glass rack with other gear below it...but that's just me.

Is there any kind of rule of thumb that certain thickness can sustain certain weights, or is it more about what's supporting it underneath?

The rule of thumb would be what the MFG say it will hold. Not knowing exactly what you have, I looked at several Bell'oggetti units and nearly all of them list the shelf capacity at 50 lbs. No way I would go 65 lbs unless it was on the bottom shelf...and even then probably not. Put it on a separate amp stand or buy a sturdier rack.

I have an Elite stand that holds up to 500lbs. total [5 shelves] and has almost 1/2" glass on top of each shelf. Though I have put an 85lb amp on the second shelf before, the entire time it sat there I kept wondering "if" it would fall or weaken the stand. It never did but I will say this. When that amp left the house and I got a pair lighter tube amps, my worry level went to zero.

I like my worry level at zero 'cause with my luck, the shelf would have broken, smashed the glass, ruined the amplifier and shorted out the SC's blowing both of my speakers. On the way down to the floor, it would have ripped my pre and CDP down to the floor [locking IC's] as well rendering the rig useless.

Yeah, I like my worry level at zero. Get a sturdier rack would be my advice.

I would call the company and ask. You might get away with having to buy another rack by seeing if you can order another glass and double it up.
