recommendations for a small sub needed

Hello guys,

just like the title says, i am looking for a small sub to use with a pair of audioengine p4 speakers and n22 amplifier. Will be using the high pass filter on the sub to cut off the frequencies at 100 hz.

So far my choices are:

Audioengine's own s8
definitive tech prosub 60

i do not want a big sub since this is going to be either in my bedroom or in my office.

If any other choices at around the price level, please recommend away, or if you have hear either of these two options and would like to shar opinions bomb away as well.

Polk PSW111 or Pinnacle Baby Boomer. I've owned the AES8, Pinnacle and Polk and there all decent little subs. I don't think there's a real winner here since none of them really slam the low end....just get what fits the budget.

I may catch some flack for this, but what about an EMO Ultra 10? It has had a lot of great reviews for the size, and price point. You should be able to find a used one I'd think.

I love small subwoofers.

I'm a fan of the Polk PSW111, good bass definition, works well for music or movie soundtracks and can't beat the company for "after-sale-service".
In my semi-humble opinion.

I am using a PSW111 in my office and am happy. It's small enough to hide and it puts out plenty of smooth bass for my application.

i will seriously look into the psw111, i would have thought somebody here have heard the prosub from def tech as well.

now another subject related. to make a 2.1 system using a couple of bookshelf and an amp that has no preout. is the proper way of doing this conecting the source to the integrated amp, then the speaker cables from the amp to the high pass filter on the sub and then a run of cables from the speaker out puts (binding post) to the speakers?

will this let me control the crossover setting or is this a fixed cut filter? meaning it cuts at 100hz or close to that and everything below stays in the sub and everything above goes to the speakers, or the crossover knob works with high pass as well as with low pass.

i hope that i am asking the question properly.

I use a Paradigm PDR-8 in the bedroom LSi7 system and it works well. It gives just a bit more kick to the system to help the music sing a bit more. Sorry, I haven't heard the other 2 subs you listed.

why not the micropro1000 or 2000?

There not very small compared to the others. The MicroPro 1000 is not returning as a current model either.

Velodyne Impact-Mini?

I don't know if its small enough, but mirage (used to) make great subs. I have owned the prestige s10, which is bigger than you want, but the s8 might work well. I also have an older mirage lf-100 that is TINY and sounds really good as long as you don't push is too hard are cross it over too high. You can probably find one on ebay for around $100 shipped.

Agree. Mirage, and its sister brand Energy, made some very musical subs. I got a new Energy 8" powered sub from Audio Advisor for $100.00 a couple of years back.
