At A Crossroad

Was thinking of pairing down to one system. I like both my HT and 2 ch systems, but I am just not getting a lot of listening time with either. So, I was thinking of selling the HT portion of my setup, and the Parasound amp and pre. I could then get a Pioneer SC-1222 and a Klipsch sub on newegg for a great price. I will keep the modded 2Bs, as they are not going anywhere for a while.

This would give me plenty of cash to get drivers and an RD0-194 for one RTA-8T (w a modded xover) to use as a center and I have a pair of Paradigm Atom v2 to use for rears.

The SC-1222 is network capable and has 120wpc of class D ICE amplification. My music selection is a bit limited (about 300 cds) and I would like to get into digital storage to increase my selections.

Guess what I am saying is that I am getting bored with my collection and I think having an avenue to greatly expand my listening choices is worth a little drop in sound quality. Am I nuts?

So you sold your Adcom to get the Parasound and Pre, and now you want to sell them? I can understand that.I kinda lost interest on my Ht set up, other than the occasional movie a couple of times a week it sits idle since I got a couple of new 2 channel rigs consisting of Adcoms and SDAs that's all I listen to, I have a couple of other rigs that sit idle the SDA'S got me hooked.

If your looking to unload your Parasound stuff get in touch with pglbk I think that's his member name he just recently got Some 2B's like we do and I believe he is looking for a Parasound set up. I can understand your wanting to downsize, I should but can't. Good luck with your decision just hang on to those 2B's.

Why not consolidate into a 2 channel HT? I did this and don't miss surround sound at all. Not sure what your listening habits are, but mine is mostly 2 channel. When I watch movies, I don't pay as much attention to the audio as I do the video and I found I get more involved in a movie when I don't have things buzzing around my head as much.

Yeah, I am keeping the 2Bs. Sunk a bit of money into them and they sound great. They really are efficient as I cant put the volume much past 9:00. The Parasound combo really brings out the low end in the SDAs and SACDs sound incredible. I have listened to the 2Bs with the Pio and although I have to turn it up a bit more to achieve the same SPL, it is a nice sound nonetheless. I think the ICE amplification will be more so.

not a bad thought. Should try a movie or two in 2ch. Could always use the pio as a pre again. That Parasound IS really a good match for the 2Bs.

I run my two channel as a 2.1 for movies and have never been happier. With quality speakers the dialogue is clear and the musical soundtrack is exceptional.

I agree with others suggesting that you run 2ch HT. A lot of the folks in this 2ch forum started with a HT set up and ended up with 2ch. That's how it was for me. Music is on the top of my priority list and I've completely lost interest in HT.
But of course, it's up to you to decide.

Its not that Ive lost interest in HT, it just seems what I have is overkill for how much I listen. I think I am willing to trade some power for having a larger selection of music choices. The 2Bs are not hard to drive at all. Actually, in doing this, I think I will improve the HT side and slightly decrease the 2 ch side, but not enought to disappoint me. Also, would have enough cash left over to buy a new laptop!

"Sounds" like selling your Parasound would be a downgrade.

Sell what you're certain you won't miss but DON'T down grade your electronics - you'll regret it!

Good advice, I know. I have a number of different things I could do here. Could keep the 1500a and accomplish the same thing, but would forgo the laptop. The Pio would have plenty of juice to power one RTA8T and a pair of Paradigm Atoms.

I may be wrong, but sounds like you're still a little undecided about this. If I were you, and undecided, I would probably pack up the HT system, and store it in some unused area, like a spare closet. Then I'd give myself 6 months or so to decide if I really wanted to make this decision. Could be you'll sell all or part, but hate to see people make rash decisions. Who knows, a few months,and you may be glad you didn't sell something.

Sometimes we struggle with decisions for a reason.

^This. And I don't think there is any such thing as overkill, I wish that term would just go away. Take your time and do different configurations with the gear you have and put the rest away, I'll bet 10-1 that at some point you will change your mind and then all you have to do is pull the rest back out and put it together again rather than spend more money buying gear all over again.

I have seen this happen too many times on here.

I switched to two channel for HT and music. I was never happy with the sound from my center channel so i decided to make some changes. I changed out my system entirely and went to a 2.0 system (upgraded my speakers, pre, amp). Agree with markmarc that dialogue and music soundtracks are fantastic. I don't miss the center channel, the surround sound, or the clutter.

With that said, i am never totally satisfied and sometimes just looking for a change. I think that Rpf and cfrizz gave you good advice so you don't regret your decision later and end up spending more money than necessary...like me :eek:

Agreed here. Throw some stuff in the closet and play around with it all when you have time. I held onto my RT3000p's and CS1000p for quite a while after going pure 2 channel. I let the 1000 go a while back and am now willing to part with the 3000's. If you're not hurting for money, there's no point in letting something go just to change. I ended up moving the 1000 to get a PJ and now I'm trying to get rid of the 3000's for an upgrade on the Ushers. Like I said before, after hearing what a movie sounds like through the Jolida/Usher, I have no regrets of moving to a 2 channel HT. On that note, I'll also add that my room is a 12x14 and the Usher's have no problem filling that room with sound. If you're in a larger room, it might be a little different story.

Could see easily doing this.I made the same basic move. Originally I got my H/T set which was the RX-V665 >Denon 1940cI CDP.
Klipsch H/D #500 smalls w an 8'' sub .1.I instantly knew I liked and listened to music more than movies.2. The Yamaha while when
it was not calibrated right and locked in a rack w/o the proper venting when pushed tended to clip way to often. After listening to
most of you saying I must get at the very least a power amp to take over the power duties of the avr. Once that was done I was
full in to the 2chl. seperates world. Not to mention that I did not even have a BLU/Ray player so movies were always the younger brother waiting for hand me down clothes so to speak.

I would keep two separate systems. A H/T rig and a separate 2 channel system.

You're not sacrificing power in a 2ch or 2.1ch HT, IMO. I used to own a full blown Klipsch RF HT system with big speakers. Later on I sold the receiver, center and put the rears in storage. I used the mains as a 2ch HT but this time powered it with SS seperates. It sounded more dynamic and powerful compared to the receiver and full blown system with a sub. It didn't reach as low as the sub, but it was much more powerful down to the main speakers lower limits.
