Ever say, "What the f@#k?" when connecting components?

This may sound strange, but I have no idea why my speakers want to be hooked up the way they are. They seem to have a mind of their own.

I have my fronts (Rti70's) bi-amped -- the highs going to an HK 525 and the lows to an HK PA 2000 amp. Everythings cool, no problems. Sounds fantastic. Well, yesterday I was changing out the banana plugs on the amp side, and when I finished and put in a CD, only the left speaker had bass. So I began to diagnose the problem. I figured it could only be three things -- the amp, the audio cable, or the speaker cable. So I switched the left speaker with the right one on the amp and then I only got bass on the right side. Cool, that ruled out a problem with the amp or the audio cable. Then I changed out the "bad" speaker cable, but the same problem persisted. Then I put the left speaker cable into the right side input on the amp and the right speaker cable into the left side again, and the speakers sounded like they were supposed to with music, but I was concerned about how they'd sound with movies.

I thought I would wait until today to try it again and see what happens. Same thing. Now I've got the left tweeter firing with the right midrange and vice versa.

How the hell did that happen???

Are you sure you didn't get the polarities switched?

I'm positive (no pun intended).

Pretty confused here, but somehow a thought about a loose connection in your amp's right speaker posts keeps creeping out of the fog.

Could be internal to the amp...

I think Tour might be on to something. Have the amp bench tested.

Try the speakers with the 525 alone (with the jumpers in, no biwire). If they work as normal, I would say the amp is the culprit.

I know i have had things conneceted correctly, and no sound. Scratching a moment... pull the whole thing apart rewire the same way and Bam another notch! Maybe I just thought they were wired correctly.

Yeah, I'll do a partial takedown next week, re-wire everything, and see if the problem persists before I take any further action. I plan to change out the speaker cables anyway and hook up my second amp to the center channel. I'll bet it's something very minor.

OK, I figured out the problem. For some reason, the amp didn't appreciate one of the banana plugs. Kinda like a woman rejecting a man for his inadequacies.

Anyway, I changed my speaker wire running to the amp from DIY to Acoustic Research Master Series 10 ga. wire with banana plugs that I "stole" off ebay for $30 for a pair of 15 footers. This stuff is thicker than J-Lo's ass. And I must admit, when I put on my reference CD in -- Dianne Reeves -- it sounded distinctly better -- more clarity and detail.

Now I'm back on track and lovin' the sound.
