A receiver is a combination of a processor, an amplifier, and a tuner all in the same box sharing a common power supply. Separates are individual components. Pre-amp for sound processing, volume control, and source selection. An amplifier, well it does nothing more than amplify the signal it receives from the pre-amp. Note that many pre-amps are also equipped with a tuner as well. Separates are the next level of audio gear, individual components sound and perform better because they do only 1 job and are generally built better than receivers. Yes there are exceptions, but not too many.
