It's only illegal if you're altering the currency to make the value of the note different.
I have a coworker who (because he has no work to do) has been doing this with money. It's...yeah.
Side-note, my mother works at the Bureau of Engraving & Printing Western Currency Facility here in Fort Worth. I recently took a family-only tour...amazing.
air mattress, folding TV table, and a 1966 Allied Electronics Christmas catalog on the floor?
You poor, poor soul...

Maybe, or maybe not:

Defacement of currency is a violation of Title 18, Section 333 of the United States Code. Under this provision, currency defacement is generally defined as follows: Whoever mutilates, cuts, disfigures, perforates, unites or cements together, or does any other thing to any bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence of debt issued by any national banking association, Federal Reserve Bank, or Federal Reserve System, with intent to render such item(s) unfit to be reissued, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.
Defacement of currency in such a way that it is made unfit for circulation comes under the jurisdiction of the United States Secret Service. The United States Secret Service web address is www.secretservice.gov.
With severe defacing, it could be hard to read the value of bill for people with poor vision or money scanners. So a judge could rule against you.
Not my most productive weekend at the track :(

Nope. Mostly just cosmetic with the bike too. I could've gone without the dented tank and broken gauge cluster though :(

Crappy thing is that it wasn't even my fault. Someone a few bikes ahead of me lost their coolant cap and dumped coolant all over the track.
But yup - that's the game I choose to play. I haven't had good luck this year. One race weekend and one track day weekend so far this year. Spun a bearing on the track bike during the race weekend. Was using my street bike to instruct the beginner group this track day and wrecked it. Hopefully the rest of the year goes better!

Huh, a picture of infinity (and the Hubble Space Telescope wasn't even required).
