Yes by a mile.
Sennheiser wins.
The Dr. Dre headphones are not BAD... but... you are paying too much for the brand name and excessive bass.
Sennheiser all the way.
Look also at Grado.
I'm going to go the different route and say:
It depends on what you will be connecting the headphones to and what kind of music you will be playing..
No separated headphone amp. I simply use the headphone with the Para zpre and tuner for some heavy to morderated rock FM station ( 93.7 fm in Houston) so the other half won't be bother at night.
The Senn HD600 series is not quite what I want to spend for a headphone to listen to FM rock stastion. I know the Monster beats headphone has some not too favorable reviews besides its powerful bass.
Senn HD 580/600/650 series really need an amp to make them shine. If you are just going to run off a preamp, I'd find something that is more efficient. Possibly Grado SRxx. Not sure how important bass is for you.
Perhaps you should look over this thread:

The Grados are great and will have WAY more detail and imaging than the Dr. Dres which I heard in a BB a while back...the Dres have prodigious bass but are NOT very clean....actually they are not much cleaner than the 100 dollar pair of Sony DJ HPs I have with me here in China...they just put out a TON more BASS!

The Dr. Dre cans are PURE TRASH.
I have the Sennheissers HD 280 and I like them a lot.. Amazon also tends to have them on sale.
I have a pair of HD 212's that I bought for general use which work great also have a pair of 555 which I love as well. Love both and think that they a a very good and well built product and sound very well. my 212's have taken a beating and withstood all of it.
Sennheiser HD 280 Pros are full-sized sealed headphones that can be had for $100 or less. Very comfortable, sound very good (IMO) and are great when you don't want those around you to be bothered by your music. They are also quite efficent...as you can see by the picture below I sometimes use them with an iPod Shuffle. I let a couple of folks hear this setup at PF a couple years ago and it sounded much better than one might think.

yeah I was surprised myself with them, I got them for xmas from the Wife. I think they are actually clearer on the high end than my monitor 60s .. I put in a Diana Krall SACD and the High Hat and brush snare are always very fuzzy but with the Sennheisers I could really pick those out.
Got one NIB @ J & R for $99.00 free shipping.
J & R has the Polk monitor3 on sale for $94.00 a pair free shipping just in case somene maybe interested in get them. I wish they have the LSi serires on sale but not yet.
Thank you guys for getting me away from Monster. :D
Interesting, I searched for any reviews on the monsters and this came up.
I heard them they other night LOTS of bass you could feel the head phones shaking from the amount of bass. Remins me of those skull candies. I may have to try the sennheisers for a nice pair of around ear headphones as all i have is ear buds from kipsch and bose.
Ok, I know I’m very late to the game, but I have to say these classic Grado’s are a steal for $79 bucks!
I also have a pair of Sennheiser PX-200’s for the gym and they are great for the purpose, but I wanted something of a little better quality for my work/school commute. I’m not yet into using headphones at home so I wanted to stay away from anything that required additional power to drive. I was looking for someone strictly for an iPod use. After an endless shootout at j&r music world after work yesterday, I went with the sr-60i. I tried the 80i but they were out of stock and there was a small noticeable difference in bass. The detail is pretty rich for the price range. I didn’t find the head support uncomfortable as some have complained. I also like the fact that their operation is located in Brooklyn.
My only complaint would be that these are definitely big ole’ ear muffs that will work out fine for the cooler months but will not be suitable for outdoor use during summer.
I do have to add that j&r had a whole entire wall full of Beats by Dre, Beats by Diddy:rolleyes:, Lady Gaga:rolleyes:, Monster’s Miles Davis Estate edition ( something like that), and Quincy Jones headphones. It kills me that folks are willing to pay a premium endorsement fee just for something that is simply rebadged by a celebrity. It reminds me of all of those Isuzu Rodeos dressed up by Acura.
Any thoughts on great ear buds? I’d like a pair of these but these are certainly not something that you can or would demo.
Shure makes nice ear buds, be sure to check out the 420 or 530. They come with multiple adapters and different pads to fit just about any ear and jack.
Thanks, i'm on it.
Man, can't believe Sennheiser HD's and Dr. Dre Monster beats headphones were even in the same sentence!
It's like asking "should I buy the cerwin vegas or rtia9's?"
Everyone has their own personal taste, but they are just two completely different animals.
Well I'm a big Sennheiser fan! ... so you know what I would choose.
That said I did buy the wife Monster Heartbeats for Valentines day (for the gym), she loves them but doesn't really like audio the way I do.
All the Monster stuff Dr Dre included, is all about Marketing and bass. Who else would install a battery in the earphone to bump the bass....kind of like the "thumpers" with the subs in their trunk at the stop light IMHO.
