It is the black plastic laminate or vinyl that peeled. I will try open the baffle today or tomorrow when I have time. Will report back when it is done.

I think the laminate shrunk and pulled off because the end of the laminate show evidence of tear. If my guess is right, the laminate should be wrapped around the front baffle.

The rt55i closet pair is a solid one ... for a beer, there is nothing can beat

I use them on my UPA-1s and RT55i, they fix firmly in them. The cables also stay firmly compared to monoprice's.
