Go with the "Y" connector.
I had the same situation and someone posted that using the "Y" to left & right increased the output from just connecting one channel.
I tried it out and they were right!

Actually the Y splitter is about the only cable I didn't buy at Monoprice. :) They didn't have the same cable there.

I bought one at Amazon - a Monster brand one for about $12. It works fine.

If I recall correctly, the RM20s have a -3Db at 100Hz.
So I would use that as the cutoff.

I would definitely try this but my sub does not have the "on" setting - just the automatic one.
