THe only reason, I know of, not to use synthetic in an older vehicle is you will have leaks that you didnt have, or leaks that will be worse, than with conventional oils. The synthetic oil will work...
I would say that it is fine. Mine pulls around 3.8-4 amps, but I probably dont have the system you do. Also, mine reads around 121-123 volts.

I would try the firmware update. I had this problem with my BDP-S300, but while playing Blu-Rays, and the update solved it.
