J&R has the original Monitor 70s for $180 shipped, which I don't believe are acoustically different from the 'Series II' rebrand. Put saved money towards a decent sub or bribing the wife.

What's your price range? Two of the cheapest receivers with pre-outs right now I think are the Yamaha RX-V665 ($250-300) and Onkyo 707/708 ($400-650).
