M&K go DOWN the HOLE! lol!

Alright, the bottum driver isnt blown, but its heading there. It was about.........90% of the M&K's THD. Now I am more happy with the M&K sound with all that distortion missing. I talked to M&K and they said another 83 bucks! So I guess my list has been changed, M&K driver is next...OUCH! Ooo well, I unplugged it, but left it in it's current position. Because this gapeing hole where the bottum firing driver was let about 60% of all the bass escape and I had close to ZERO bass...lol! So Now The bottum firing driver is back, and it still moves with the air flow! Like a passive radiator! Totally cool!

why sink anymore money in to that thing, get a Polk, or Svs or something, Velo maybe.. didn't you just replace the other driver awhile back, and now you need another and want to use a external amp,

Dude, you dont understand...these woofers in it are 13 friggin years old!!!! HELLO!!!!! Their kinda dieing.....i would rather spend 80 bucks instead of 500+. Velodyne, and Polk are ZEROS to M&K. Way too boomy, may play 1 db or so louder...but their boomy POS's with NO low EXSTENTION. SVS....in the future.

I know dem sound like flame war words. But sheat, the M&K is an awesome sub. Hands down, very accurate. More accurate than the Velo HGS line. May not be loud, but its an awesome subwoofer. Polk, mediocre at best. Their not accurate, their boomy and have about NO low exstention. The M&K goes down to 18hz. The reason the OLD drivers are going off is....plainly...their OLD. I mean cmon, give em a break!

by the way...when I said Velo is Zero to M&K. I mean the lower line, their HGS series is pretty awesome. Just not an M&K. Not as accurate, deeper, louder maybe, but not an M&K.

I would agree that if you can get decent replacement sub drivers for less than $100 each, and you've got the appropriate cabinet for them, yadda yadda yadda, it makes sense to replace the drivers and get a few more years out of the thing, then demote it to a secondary system. Even if you pay to replace both drivers *and* add .. say.. a PE plate amp, you'd have less than $300 in a sub that you (from what you say) wouldn't be in a huge rush to replace. Sounds like a sound investment *if* you're pretty happy with the sub when it is functioning.

Yeah it fills up my room easily. It has low exstention, and I plan to use it in a secondary system. I highly doubt I will buy a external amp for it though.

You took me wrong, and usually of course replace a driver.. it's cheaper.. but then you have a 13 year old sub, We have made improvments in amps, woofers, and enclosures over the last 10+ years, I understand you probolly got it free from your dad so i would replace the drivers in your situation, But 300 more as stated above, drivers, amps, when you could get a svs for 599.00 and to put my 404 in perspective, i turned up the amp all the way up showing off and it surely wasn't broken yet.. My current 404 is fine,

also get off the Polk subs suck garbage.. I like my 404, may not be an SVS which i also would like later but by far Junk.. Mine is not "boomy" and have you heard one in your room?? or just at CC or some such retailers sorry demo room??

This is not a rant for argueing over, Just come on Polk velo and other subs all work fine, some better then others.. some surperor to others Like SVS, But non i believe are garbage that i have mentioned.. certainly that M&K isn't the be all either..

The MX-90. Yes I am aware of the changes of subwoofer technology. By the way, no the subwoofer was no free. My Dad charged me 450 dollars for it actually. Dont say hey, you paid 450, sell it...buy a new one! Well, sorry to say, im broke, and the M&K will have to do.

Hey chill buddy, sheesh.. just a few statments.. that's all and if you paid 450 for it, why another 80.00 and the other one you just replaced?? that's all i was saying.. The link i gave you is at 150.00 for the whole thing so far anyways.. it looks like a nice sub, but don't bash anything else because of that fact.. Dr.spec knows SVS subs are pretty surperior but never bashes other subs, simply says they can't reach truely low as the SV, go get your new driver and enjoy just don't get rid of that money pit afterwards, :)

hmm, first of all that subwoofer you sent me...isnt mine...its the model below it. MX-80. I plan to get the SVS Pb2, it'll be in the future though. No time soon. Doc seems to be a bass head, all he boast about is low exstention and how much it can shake the house. I havnt seen a post yet of how accurate it is, a subwoofer in a car can shake my windows, but can it do the tunes? Probally can, but Bass that shakes the roof isnt the end all either.

Sid, you either need to tell us what you actually want to get from peoples posts. Half the time, you bitch because we try to help improve your sound quality when you just want boomy, loud stuff. Then you pull a 180 and act like you want sound quality over the basic boomyness that you most often say you want. Pick one and stick with it.

yeah but polk subs suck, and low end velo's suck, and all other subs suck and sound boomy, what are these companies thinking and how are they selling all this junk and still in business, MX needs to be in charge at these companies to get the QC straight, and make them all sound like M&K's and stinky Rt35's.. :) :) :)

Dude, Ive heard Velodyne, they are great subs. No doubt. Polk subwoofers...well their nice, but they just dont have the impact or low end and the ones I have heard; are boomy. The Velodyne HGS series, for a small arse box...they kick major tail! Im serious!

Now wherever did you come up with an absolutely brilliant idea like that? ;) The passive radiator effect is a good observation, and certainly would beat the hell out of a 10” (?) port… :LOL: … So how’s it sound? How much impact did you lose?

As for an external amp… the wiring is not difficult and should be fairly obvious to you since you’ve peeked into it. Just disconnect the speaker leads form the built in amp and wire them to a pair of terminals. Just be sure to sketch what is and label all wires before disconnecting. That said, I don’t think it is the way you want to go. But why are you thinking you need a new amp period, let alone an external amp?

As for the bad driver, it may be repairable. What did it look like, feel like, etc…Is the surround good? Does it drag when you push on it? What size is it… 10”?

$83 ain’t bad if M&K’s quoting you a new driver. Is it new or a rebuilt one? If the latter, ask M&K how much they’ll give for yours in trade.

Now as for the behavioral side…
Guys, Sid, the reason is not likely to go near/ “hang” with us starts with the fact that we’re old.

And yeah, he reacted to what he saw as criticism of his sub, his plan, but we all are prone to do that to some degree. As for what he wanted in this thread, it started as nothing but sharing a little joy and info on a making do step he took… and that’s a good share. Then it evolved into the amp discussion and other topics… again good stuff. So a little slack here if you please.

Sid… folks were just offering other alternatives after addressing your specific questions. They were good thoughts and some even had some work behind them, like the ebay auctions to which faster posted links. A “thanks, but no thanks because” type answer would serve you a lot better than firing the first salvo, which is what you did here, then a second, which you even acknowledged.

Just my $0.20 worth (was feeling extra generous tonite… :D )
