    Default Google Voice Invites

Does anyone have a spare Google Voice invite?

The reason I ask is 'cause:

    1) It's pretty bad@$$/
    2) I'm unemployed and looking to relocate to a place I used to live, but no longer have a local number to... Making it look as though I'm less available than other candidates in the area.

So... anyone with an extra invite would make my day.

That would be great, but I don't want to ask you to pull personal strings like that...; I mean, I'd be pretty stoked...

I noticed some people are even trying to buy invites...
Sometimes you only have to wait a few days, but I've heard other people that have been signed up to receive invites about 10 months ago...

I applied to Google back then, got the invite in a few weeks. Don't actually use it.

My daughter was in Australia, so it and Skype came in handy for her, but I had to do the actual signup Stateside for her using her old cell #.

Then Virgin Blue stole her phone. And camera.

I asked this on the google voice forum, but thought I'd ask here as well to see if you guys have any of the answers to some of my questions.

I have AT&T right now, but when my contract ends in February I plan on switching to T-Mobile and getting the Nexus One.

    My questions are:

    1. Should I (A.) Get my new 'google number' now, (B.) Wait until I switch service providers to T-Mobile, or (C.) it doesn't matter one way or the other--there are no benefits in changing now or waiting until I switch.

    2. If I do get GV now with my current cell phone number and get a google number, should I give T-Mobile my current cell phone number or my google number?

    3. If possible and I gave T-mobile my google number, would my old number disappear?

If it doesn't disappear...or if for some reason I can't give T-Mobile my google number, what happens when someone calls my cell phone number instead of my google number?

    Thanks!

GV number is tied to whatever number you assign to it for forwarding. When you are out of your contract with ATT and you WANT to keep that number then you would give to TMO to use or they can assign a new one for you when you sign up for new account. Not sure if you can actually use GV# since its technically not a cell phone number.

    At least i think....

I think you are asking if you can port an existing google number to a new cell phone service. That won't work. Your google voice number forwards your calls to another number. I think the forwarding part is inherent and can't be avoided. You give/tell people your google voice number and don't really give out/tell people the number it is being forwarded to anymore. Assuming T-Mobile/Nexus one will have a slick Google Voice app, it will be transparent and your "real" number is almost non-existant.

What the above said. The plan is you'll always have a single GOogle Voice number, "forever." Whatever your actual cell phone number is is irrelevant; if it changes, you just log into Google Voice and say "forward calls to X instead of Y", and everyone who calls you doesn't even know anything changed. THey'll continue to call your GOogle number.

To answer your question more directly, get a Google number now. FOrward it to your current AT&T number. When you switch phones, you can keep your AT&T number and move it to T-Mobile, or you can get a new T-Mobile number, it doesn't matter; your Google Voice number will simply forward to it.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Thats exactly what I'm asking. Thanks for clearing that up.

    Couple more questions.

    1. What about mobile to mobile and long distance charges?

    Scenario 1:
My current cell phone is a local number to my parents. Its a 361 number. Say I get a 979 GV number. If they called my GV# would it not be local since theyre calling a 979 number instead?

    Scenario 2:
Currently, my friends calling me from 979 numbers are paying long distance to my 361 number, would it be local if i had a 979 number?

    Scenario 3:
When my wife and I get on T-Mobile, since shes not calling my 361 number thats with t-mobile, but my GV#, would that call NOT be free since shes not calling my GV#?

    2. What happens if someone doesnt call your GV#, but your regular cell phone number? I'm guessing you still get the call to your cellphone, but you get none of the features of GV, correct?

1.1 Would no longer be local for them.
1.2 Would now be local for them.
1.3 Depends on why it was free in the first place. Most cell phones plans I think nowadays have US long distance included. If that was the reason, it will still be free. If you don't have free long distance, and you get if free because of mobile-to-mobile, favorites, etc. it will no longer be free. I think that answers the question anyways.

    2.0 Exactly as you said.
