come on Joe, you were in favor of spanking......goes well, hand in hand, with, well, handcuffs.

eh.......she will get over it, of course the lawyers are licking their chops, I dunno, big deal she got handcuffed and walked off for doing something wrong, bet she will not do it again, oh, and bet the adults responsible won't do that again either......ya gotta think about it.

Not enough details to make an informed judgement IMO. For example, the wifey's brother once did something stupid as a kid. The cops turned up on the doorstep early one morning and shared their information with the parents and told them that their plan was to make a big deal out of it and give him a fright. They agreed. So, up marched the guys to his bedroom, hauled him out of bed in his pyjamas, cuffed him and threw him in the back of the patrol car. Then they gave him an earful, but let his horrified parents persuade them to give him a second chance.

He was allowed to go back inside for breakfast after that, but he had to agree to go and "work off his debt" to the person who was the "victim" of his minor "crime".

I thought, when I first heard that story, that this was a terrific story, demonstrating exactly how a community Police Force should work. I don't know if this was the idea behind this story, or what else was going on before the doodling incident. I just hope the parents aren't out to make a buck from a trumped up lawsuit. Now that would be crazy.

Was it Voltaire who claimed that common sense was not very common... ?

Based solely off the information given in the article, the administrators at the school and the officer(s) involved need to have their heads slammed into a wall with the words "common sense" written on it.

    Maybe then it'll stick.

Because "zero tolerance" requires zero brain power. They are ruining childrens future my charging all these petty offenses as crimes. Idiots.

By today standards, I'd still be in prison.

The liberals whined and cried about spanking our children (home and school), and practically made that against the law in many states, and now they whine and cry about childrens' behavior in schools. Well, DIP****S, when you tie peoples hands behind their backs (parents and teachers), it's mighty tough to do what you've got to do. So the geniuses then decided to introduce "zero tolerance" rules.

I'd go on, but they'll ban my ass. This crap makes my blood boil.

Arizona recently passed a rule that would make parents pay for graffitti removal after their kids first offense....my question is, why were we (as taxpayers) paying for the removal on the first offense?

Sometimes budget cuts can have a real common sense outcome, huh?

They should have tasered her before the incident happened, that would have prevented damage to the desk.

That's what I don't understand. Have the parents pay? Ok, but only after the punk kid spent 2 straight days with soap and water trying to scrub the crap off with an old undershirt and made his fingers bleed to the bone. What does it teach the kid if he breaks the law and the parents have to pay without any consequence to themselves? Doesn't make sense to me.

My gripe with this is that its not the cops job to handle this kind of ****. The teacher is probably more comfortable passing the kid off to the cops than reprimanding the girl and forcing her to clean the desk. The teacher is not empowered as an authority figure when she can be sued by the student and her parents for involuntary servitude (for making her clean the desk), assault (for waving her finger and using a stern voice), child abuse (for making the girl clean with harsh detergents) and child neglect (for not watching to make sure the girl is staying out of trouble like doodling on a desk).

I think chopping off the fingers on her writing hand would be punishment enough. Poor desk!

The hanging thing is a whole sub-set after the spanking handcuffing thing.....

from what I read she had to do 8 hours community service and had to do a book report, just family court, seems the schools though have designed some kind of police policy for any form of graffitti to public property. ok, its out of hand, I mean they handcuffed a five year old as well???? geezzz.

Never got one I didn't deserve, and I missed out on quite a few I did. It is what it is. You remove peoples ability/authority/support, then they can no longer effectively control the environment. So instead of addressing that bad decision, they make another bad decision by "criminalizing" everything. Gotta love those band-aid fixes.

BTW, I couldn't love my Mother & Father more; they had the courage to do the right thing. They weren't the popularity contest parents of today, and for that I am infinitely thankful.

Some people just don't have the stomach that integrity requires. These people shouldn't reproduce.

...and yes, I have anger issues. Passion was stressed in our household, and we were allowed to vent when it seemed apparent to my parents that we needed to. They didn't want to kill our spirit in the name of discipline. Lots of gray areas, and thinking involved huh? It took effort, integrity, and the intestinal fortitude to be the "bad guy" once in awhile.

I'm sorry; I can understand what you all are saying about kids needing discipline and such. I'm all for that, but the fact that this big a deal was made over a girl writing her name on a desk is just ridiculous. Why waste the cops time, the lawyers time, the courts time with something this stupid? School should have had the girl clean the damn desk and then it was done. Cops, handcuffs, etc? A bit much. THAT's a waste of taxpayers money IMO, having cops take their time to deal with a desk doodle.

Of course it is rediculous, but this is what happens when you develop into a "hands-off" society. You call the law to deal with it.

Discipline, rules, and structure are (some of) what provide security to kids; knowing someone is in charge. Later in life we learn to create our own security by being regimented and purposeful. Without the basis, it's much more difficult to create this sense of security within yourself, because you lack the social background to draw knowledge from.

    That's insane.

Kids have been doodling on desks for a VERY long time...it should NOT be an arrestable offense, and the idea of actually arresting someone for this is absolutely ridiculous.

Ever heard of a detention? Make them clean the desk off to teach them a lesson? Maybe make them write some lines?

That would all be perfectly acceptable.

Being arrested? Insanity. This girl now has a criminal record for doing something that nearly every kid that has ever went to school, has done.
