    Talking Teac a-4300 r2r

Just picked this up locally for $100. Wondering what your opinions are about this deck, did I do OK? The seller said it was serviced by a local vintage audio guy. I really don't know why I have been obsessed lately with getting a R2R, but I do know I've kinda wanted one ever since I started getting into audio back in the late 70's when I was in college. The seller also threw in some reels, and as it says in the ad it did have the manual, which is nice. It is a real clean unit.

At the very least, the kids and I can play on it recording them, I just need to get a couple mics. At best, it is awesome and I've got a new toy for my 2 channel rig. Anyone have a good (cheap) source for tapes (prerecorded or blank)? Thanks for the help, all.

    Hello Seeclear,
Nice deck, you did very well getting a Teac, especially for that price. You can get blank open reel tape at:

As far as pre-recorded tapes, eBay is probably the best source around. I've bought tapes from "reel lady" and have been very satisfied. There's a forum for tape enthusiasts called "tapeheads.net" that is pretty good.
    Have fun, Ken

Thanks, Ken. I was just hoping that I didn't get a real "dog". But for that amount I figured, how bad could it be? Good to know I didn't screw up. ;)

If you want some GOOD blank tape buy ATR from U.S. recording. Killer stuff. If you don't have a PRO unit buy 1 grade under mastering because your erase heads won't be strong enough to totally blank it out. Option 2. Buy the good stuff and purchase a bulk tape eraser. Just put your credit cards else where when you bulk erase. Some are strong enough to blank them out as well.
