Thumbs down Can you see the smoke?

I have been on hold now with the worst company on the planet, COMCAST for over 30 minutes now....

Last week, I had some work done in the yard that exposed my cable. Appearently, when I had it installed a few years ago, they never BURIED the CABLE! Tonight, my lawnmower chopped it to ribbons and tangled it around the blade. This is now my second attempt to get through after the first was disconnected.

So the question is not whether or not I keep Comcast (they are dead to me now) burt who do I go with now? My only choices are Direct TV or Dish Network. Any preferences?

On another thread you said you were 20 years old. You say you've had Direct TV for over 10 years. So, since you were 8 or 9 years old? Mowed a lot of lawns or something to pay for it? Just curious. :D:D

Just got off the phone (finally!!!) They are going to get a tech out here to fix it and cover a couple months of service, but I don't really think I care at this point. I will be calling Direct TV in the morning.

So it's Comcast's fault you did some work and exposed your cable coax feed line and then sucked it up in your lawn mower? It sounds like they are really trying on the CS end of things. I don't have a real fondness for them either, however this sounds more in their favor than yours.

    Hello

I've been a DirecTv customer since pretty much day one when they launched.

I made the move to HD a couple of years ago and have been very very happy with the channels, reception, and reliability of the system. Customer support, ehhh.....

But, I did do quite a bit of prep work before they came to do the install. I made a bracket to mount the dish on an old C-band pole. Heres the thread about it:

    http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=147406

I ran all the cables myself, and I also bought my own receivers from weaknees.com, two HR-21 Pro's. Now about the receivers, I've been "punished" for buying my own receivers and not getting the free ones from DirecTv....but I sit back and laugh at all the issues people have these other model receivers. Yes, some do have good luck but theres alot of problems and I've had zero issues with these receivers....They are fast, stable, and error free...

    So, there you go...

They confirmed that there was a request made to bury the cable but it was never done. I had some work done on the side of the house on my central air system and they must have lifted it from under the grass. I have not been able to get around to cutting the grass for a couple weeks and did not see the cable.

Tracing the cable all the way back to the feed confirmed the cable was never buried. It was just covered by weeds in the vacant lot next door where they tossed it when they did the install.

I've had DirecTV for a while and have been pretty happy with them. I think if you sign up using a current customers account number both you and that person get $100. Worth checking into maybe.

FIOS is the best from a scan rate perspective, I would say direct is second but not cheap.

I don't know what version of DVR HD DTV has now. But my HR20-100 and HR20-700 are stable and solid for the past 3 years. The latest HD-DVR might have SVM, which has 2 tuners but allow you to run one cable per box.

Comcast (along with all the other cable providers I've dealt with) are notorious for burying their drops no deeper than a few inches. They consider it cheaper to repair ther drops than to spend the money to bury them at a normal drop depth.

I'm sure if it would've been buried at the normal 12" plus for a drop wire he would've never exposed it.

To the OP. I've been with Directv for 10 yrs and I'll never go back to a cable provider.

I've used directv and dish and prefer directv. I despise comcast, although they're the only game in town for high speed internet, so I've bitten the bullet on that. I will say that I'm not terribly pleased with my dvr box (it's slow), but everything else is great. It rarely has reception problems (like never... Ok, maybe once).

P.S. I've heard that new company xfinity is pretty good. ;)

That's surprising. We've had Dish Network in three different locations (all local to L.A.) since 2005. It's generally cheaper than DTV, but has all the channels we actually want or need. The "cut outs" you mention are extremely rare, less than once a year (and I installed the Dish myself the last time, without any specialized tools), even during the extremely heavy rains in the winter down here. They generally (99%) correct themselves within minutes without any intervention required, when it's not sixty seconds or less.

I wont comment on DTV since we're happy with DN, and it's cheaper, so we see no valid reason to change just to pay more.

ATT U-verse is all very fine and dandy, but the pricing is far worse than cable, and certainly far worse than DTV or DN.

    Yep, Direct TV.
I had them for three years the first time.
Went all out and with the savings in my one year off, have all other sets on over the air signals.
We just went back to Direct TV a month ago.
I could go either way, but this way, we get Sunday NFL ticket.
Direct TV gives you more channels, more movies, for not much more money.
Direct TV is a better deal.
I went with Choice Plus with no HD.
Besides, my receiver up-converts all incoming signals anyway.
( but I do notice my over the air is superior in quality )
I also have hooked, the crappy Acer I mentioned in other posts, to my HT, so I have internet music and TV there as well.
    Good luck in your quest.

We have a Comcast service center right here in New Castle County. I don't think I've had to wait more than a minute for Customer Service unless of course there was a major outage due to a thunder storm.

They got it down very well here, I guess they are going region by region to get it right around the rest of the country.

Had DirectTV for years without a glitch EXCEPT in times of very heavy rain or snow.. moved on to a fantastic wooded lot with huge trees = no line of sight for my DirectTV dish...Comcast was the ONLY choice went thru hell for months (search comcast here ;) ) but after 12 or so trips here , replacing everything, testing, scanning, etc they got it right and not a problem since..a happy Comcast customer now................their CS was always first rate for me at least but the techs in the field weren't the best, especially the contractors they used.................

I have a family member who works for them...some of the stories are completely insane...in a bad way, so nothing surprises me. And they are going through a re-branding of sorts but only telling their employees it is to compete with AT&T. If a company cannot recognize and admit to problems, then they will never solve the problems.
