Default SACD player no longer reads SACD disks

My Marantz SA-11S1 SACD player is on the blink. :( It plays CD's fine, but when I pop in an SACD it will either player the CD layer or say that it can't read it.

Anybody know what the problem could be? I'm planning on shipping it off to get repaired, but just wanted to get an idea of the problem and costs. Thanks

It's a long shot, but you can try using a laser lens cleaner on it. Good luck!

Ern Dog, I could be mistaken, but that Marantz has a Philips transport that, in the past, have been known to have that issue. If it is a transport problem, it might cost you some.

I have a Philips SACD1000 that I know others had similar problem in the past.

    Good luck with the repair.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Wondering IF you tried the simple "Unplug and reset". Unplug the power cord for about a minute, plug back in and give it another try.

I have seen disc players not play due to a dirty lens.

It could be the optical reader failing. I replaced a couple on Sony 999's that wouldn't play SACD's but would play CD's. One was a modded player, one was stock. The cost was ~$75 for the reader.

Well, trying a lens cleaner is worth a shot before sending it in.

I don't know if this is relevant, but nevertheless, good reading:

Sorry to hear, Dog. Figured it was worth a try though. If we were closer, I'd let you borrow one of my machines. Always good to have a backup unit. Good luck with the fix.

    Thanks guys.

My back up unit is a Panasonic Blu ray player. Yucko!

I'm sending it to Inner sound in Portland, Oregon. They are giving me a rough estimate of $150-$250 with a 2 week turn-around time.

    Update:
I sent it into a Marantz authorized repair center and they had it for 2.5 months and after making several attempts they were unable to repair it. They said that now it no longer will play cd's. They are recommending I send it directly to Marantz for repair.

What to do... I could try to sell it as a dead unit for parts or take my chances and send it to Marantz.

IMHO get a OPPO BDP 83SE and replace that Panasonic as well as the SACD player. The 83SE does a wonderful job with all the formats.

My 11S1 also had issues when I got it, but reading redbook CD's. Usually ejecting and trying again fixed the issue, but i sent it in for repair anyway. If think I paid $200ish to fix it.

Well Ern Dog, this is your chance, once and for all, to decide between Oppo NuForce, Modwright, and RAM versions. Nothing like a sign from above, to upgrade.

    :)

Btw, I am listening to the Modwright Oppo, analog mode (direct), Diana Krall SACD 'The Look of Love', blasting it at mark 30 on the Marantz pre pro. I can feel the bass from 8' in front of the Cremona.

    Besame Mucho. Glorious.

    Update:

Well, I decided to send it into Marantz repair center via United Radio.

I got it back today! Only costs $220. Those people at United Radio have great customer service. I could see myself using them again if I have problems in the future. The other mofos weren't able to fix it.

Anyways it sounds freakin' Awesome! I forgot how good it is! This whole ordeal was 4 months long ha ha! This Marantz is rivaling my new Modwright tube Oppo 83.

Now I've got two killer sources and I'm going to relax and have a Black Butte Porter and enjoy them :D

On a side note, I just ordered Bob Dylan's "Love and Theft" and it arrived today too, so I have it spinin' on the Marantz. This cd Rocks. Life is good.
