onkyo m-504 or yamaha m-60??????

Hello folks, i have a problem that needs your advice, i currently own an onkyo m-504, but was offered to trade for a yamaha m-60 for my onkyo, but it is hard to get them side by side for listening, but i can hear the yamaha at his place, and i cant really tell wich one sounds better, i really want something that sounds great but reliability is an issue for me--so i thought i would come to you great folks for some good advice, as to wich would you prefer and wich one is more reliable--i do know that the yamaha runs very hot in class a though--that kinda scares me though, wich ever one i end up with will be driving polk rt2000p's, please help me out the bird,, P.S.--thanx in advance.

Step sideways in my opinion. I think the Oinker will be warmer sounding and plenty strong.

The M60 may be a little more detailed, but brighter.

It's a wash.

Alex - I'll take the Onkyon M-504 for the win! It's not even a fair trade, the Yamaha is a few notches down in SQ, IMHO.

I wonder if those posting opinions have heard either. I haven't listened to the Onkyo but I would say the Yamaha is dead neutral, in biased Class-A mode it actually sounds warm. I don't understand how one could describe it as bright...I can't comment on which is better as I haven't listened or compared. I suspect you'll get different feedback depending on the forum you visit. One forum might like Onkyo, another Yamaha.

I used to sell these when new. Dead neutral to warm is NOT a description I would use. Dead, lifeless, uninspiring, and not really able to hold together driving a more difficult load. The Class A Yamaha used in these amps was more gimmick than "true class A". Great marketing hype at the time.

One huge giveaway to marketing hype over substance is the paltry heat sinks. HITH, can a self described class A amp have such tiny heat sinks................it can't because it never was true class A.

I really wouldn't choose either but I'd choose the Oinker if these were the only two choices.

And yes, I have owned both. Hindsight is always 20/20, but I'd love to have my M-504 setting in the spare gear closet. In fact I think I had both Yamaha M-60 and the M-80 power amps at different points in time.

The Onkyo is clearly a better amp.
The Yamaha is surprisingly good for what it is but it's missing a few notes here and there.
Take the Onkyo without question. It's 5/2 for the big piggy.

I did research on these two amps before and have to concur with some of the others here, the Yamaha M60 RMS per channel output is actually less than what it's rated at(as is the case nowadays with their AVRs) and the Onkyo M504 users always seem to be very happy with them. Another vote for the Onkyo. I have never had issues with my 504. A friend of mine has the M60 and prefers my 504. I have heard the M60 but not with my gear.

Hello folks, i got to bring the yamaha m-60 home to do a side by side, and lets just say the onkyo m-504 just got dethroned, the yamaha wins hands down in sound quality, much more robust and livelier mids and highs--very dynamic sound quality, it is a much better match for my polks--they just came alive with the yammi, so i'm very happy with the trade--and my friend loves the oinker on his klipsch quartets--so we both win either way,,and i thank you folks for your advice, and also all of you enjoy your tunes--thats what this hobby is about after all. the bird.

My friend loves the onkyo, thats partly why i did the trade, he's happy and im happy, i guess you can say that friends come first, plus i got good enjoyment from the onkyo so i pass it to him to enjoy, plus i love the yammi on my polks too as well, very good match, and i hope you find an onkyo yourself, it's a fine amp. the bird.;)
