    Default Long Songs on Albums?

So, what are some of your favorite 'long songs'?

Forget the 3 to 4 minute finely tuned and crafted songs meant to hit the airwaves for maximum airplay and pop payoff.

What about songs that are 8 minutes or longer that are purely for musical exploration and enjoyment?

I've been mining thru my vinyl archives and dredged up my Allman Brother's album "Win Lose or Draw" and revisited the 14:25 long song "High Falls".

No vocals - pure instrumental - sublimely soft and smooth.

The kind where you sink into your favorite couch or chair, the sunset softening into dusk, a tall drink in hand, and you let the music carry you away.

Not counting "live" or extended disco "remixes" - what are some of the long songs you enjoy?

H9: If you don't trust what you are hearing, then maybe you need to be less invested in a hobby which all the pleasure comes from listening to music.

Tin Pan Alley - Stevie Ray Vaughn
In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence.

The best way to enjoy digital music reproduction is to never listen to good analogue reproduction.

    "Thick as a Brick"

I burned a copy without a gap between the two songs so now it plays as one 43:50 long song.

A bit under the 8 minute mark but Steely Dan's "Your Gold Teeth" (Countdown to Ecstasy) is another fine long song.

Also, Pink Floyd's "Dogs" (Animals) another great long song.

    Some cool metal stuff...

Iron Maiden - The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (It's an adaptation of a poem by Coleridge, gotta love it!)

Circus Maximus - Glory of the Empire

Circus Maximus - The 1st Chapter

Both get a bit experimental, but they're progressive metal, whatever that means. People in the know tell me it's to be expected with 'prog' bands. Lots of neat tempo and thematic changes throughout.

Humble Pie – I Walk On Gilded Splinters (23:31) from the Performance Rockin'The Fillmore album. If listing a "live" version got your knickers in a twist, then the original version by Dr. John at 8+ minutes will do nicely.

Absolutely the best song (long or not) is "Close to the edge" by YES- 18:37
I agree with Norm on "Echoes" by Floyd
The Revealing Science of God (with the full intro)- YES 22:27
    The Ancient - YES 18:23
    And You and I - YES 10:41

I'll have to think of some others. I know there's more.

Yes has some incredibly long tracks.
From Relayer: "The Gates of Delirium" is 21:50

    From TFTO:
    1. "The Revealing Science of God (Dance of the Dawn)" 22:22
    2. "The Remembering (High the Memory)" 20:38
    3. "The Ancient (Giants under the Sun)" 18:35
    4. "Ritual (Nous sommes du soleil)" 21:37
    5. "Dance of the Dawn" (studio run-through) 23:35
    6. "Giants under the Sun" (studio run-through) 17:17

Listening to the studio run-throughs really gives an appreciation of the energy these guys expend on each of these songs.

Rush-Natural Science. The MoFi, Permanent Waves 180g LP is simply awesome. Also a live version to this on Rush, In Rio. I'll throw 2112 in here as well.

Hey must be something in the air, I was just listening to Permanent Waves on the way to work this morning. It has been buried in my box of CD for years until today.

I always enjoyed the epic stores in albums like Caress of Steel and "Cygnus X1 Book 1" from A Farewell To Kings and the continuation "Cygnus X1 Book 2" on Hemispheres and of course 2112. I really need to set up my turntable in a safe place away from cats and kids.

One thing that got me is, where were they going with the Part 1,2 and 3 of fear? They just seemed to drop the theme.
