Default Question - Bass Guitar Driver - 12"

My step-son just got his first bass, but he has nothing amp wise, I can't afford to get him something decent retail, don't feel like cruising pawn shops for something dirty and overpriced.

Here's the deal, I've got an Electrovoice Artistocrat corner horn, I pulled the TRX12B driver (to sell and fund the project). I can come up with a 6L6 (or family) mono tube integrated - but whats a reasonable 12" driver ($50 - $100) that anyone might recommend? I can read specs, just looking for experience with overall tone. I've never built my own, I always just went out and bought an Ampeg for my bass needs.

Any suggestions? I'm going to start browsing Selenium, Peavy, and EV. I think AES still has Jensen Alnico remakes and Celestion - I just have no idea what to even look at.

Eminence is on my list, just looking more for experience with specfic models in a bass cab application. I don't want to just buy a PA speaker on specs and have it squak at him.

Russ - man, craigslist is horrible down here, half the time you make a deal (if you can find anything) and drive out to the middle of nowhere to find noone. He likes the old school look / idea, and I really want to start him on tubes.

    Cheers,
    Russ

Russman, I would go with either 2x10in speakers or one 15. Single 12's always sounded funny to me for a bass amp. 2x12's work well but a single one seems thin in the bottom and not enough punch in the mid. Just my .02.

+1 Eminence. Outstanding sound for the price.

I play guitar, so not up on bass amps. Other than say Carvin, Trace Elliot and maybe a few other brands. But I see many deals on Craigslist for gear all the time.

Cool project Russ. If I understand correctly, you are just looking for a 12" driver to put into this cabinet. I had a kickass Carvin amp/cab when I used to play...the cool factor was that nobody else had Carvin gear at that time. However, the Carvin drivers were not well regarded...they offered an option to upgrade to EV drivers direct from the factory, which is what I had cranking out the hairband bass lines.

The other options look good as well. I've always thought of Celestion as great guitar speakers, but not necessarily great bass speakers...although I haven't kept up with any recent releases.

Also being bass player, I will have to agree about the single 12's sounding funny. Almost a hollow type sound...

8's, 10's, 15's, and 18's all the way. I use an 8x8 cab, but used to own a 2x10 and 1x18 stack (and used to run it along with my 8x8, talk about a wall of sound!).
