Question: .RUF vr .ISO film burning

My buddy has a Sammy BD-5500 blu-ray player. Avatar will not play on it and I noticed a new firmware was released on the 19th. I DL'd the file, unzipped it and was going to burn it using my "Active ISO burner" software.

My question is...the file is a .RUF so it says to burn it as a DATA CD. I don't see that option in my software to do so. Can I still burn it as an ISO, I'm guessing not.

Does anyone have a program to burn a .RUF file?

Not sure but .ruf my be the actual data file extension for the firmware. Usually firmware downloads include directions on how to extract/burn them. Was there anything included? What software are you using that doesn't allow a DataCD to be burned? That is one of the most basic kind of burns.

BTW, did you know you can also upgrade using a USB drive? Just copy the .ruf file to a thumb drive and put it in the player (sans disc) and follow the directions.

I'm using "Active ISO Burner" software, I don't see an option to burn a DATA disc. Also, looking at pics I don't see a port for a USB drive so I'll have to burn it to a CD.

Using Windows can I just open the file, drag and drop it to the CD drive and copy it?

If your friend has the BDP-C5500, there are two USB 2.0 slots. They are probably hidden behind a door or flap. That's the way I would do it, don't waste a disc.

If you insist on burning a disc, you need to use a normal burning software program like IMGBurn.

Sounds like "Active ISO Burner" is specifically for burning disc images (.iso). The company seems to offer another product called Active Data CD/DVD Burner which would give you the options for burning the data disc.

You don't burn it as an iso, you burn it as data and follow the directions explicitly. If it says use ISO 9660 only, do it. That does not mean burn an .iso image, that is the file system format.
Also, I don't know if firmware updates will work via usb as someone suggested. You'd better be sure about that before you do because there's a long line of folks who bricked their players because of this, that or the other, and saving 30 cents on a cdr is not a good enough reason.

If you're not using Nero or a similar app that burns data, they have a free version for download which should certainly do the trick.

I do have Nero, will that work? If not, can someone point me in a direction to software that will burn a DATA disc for the RUF type file?

Ron,
The USB method is so easy, and it DOES work for that model. Just copy the .ruf file to a clean USB flash drive. Open the USB flap on the front of the player, take out any discs, and put the USB drive into the port. It will recognize it and start the update. Samsung has the directions listed right there with the firmware download.

Nero does have the option of burning data cd or data DVD. Going by memory but hit Nero express then you will see options on your left hand side. Choose the data then choose cd or DVD. I don't see why a USB would not work.
