Unhappy CF 18 crashes at local airshow

This happened this afternoon during a rehersal. The pilot lost power and crashed. He was taken to hospital and is said to be okay but no real news on condition was released.

I hate watching my birds fall from the sky like that... If I had to call it, I would say pilot error as the angle-of-attack (AoA) was way off for the airspeed.

Ironic that the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive" could be heard on the PA system when the canopy popped and the pilot ejected to safety. Glad he made it out.

I didn't pay attention to the bee gees it is kind of ironic. The show is still going on tomorrow. Wouldn't that hurt ejecting so low to the ground and to the side to boot.

It would be painful, to say the least. The Chiropractor will be busy for quite some time straightening him out and he will be an inch shorter for sure. The real pain will be the 50 pounds of asshide he will lose if my suspicions are correct and pilot error is the blame.

So what do you think happened... Care to enlighten?

I just read the article an it indicated that the pilot lost power from one of the 404's(the model of the jet) and the afterburner was cooking away on the other. I also know that the Hornet should be able to fly quite safely on one engine, at least to be able to land. It is the primary reason the Hornet was chosen by the Navy after the Lightweight Fighter competition was won by the F-16. There are way to many unknowns to say with any certainty what the chain of events were. The video shows an high AOA approach at low speed, which is a common maneuver for this type of aircraft.

As far as my experience goes... I have been around this type of bird for more than 5 years and fixed the GE-F404's that power them. My involvement with them goes back to the early days of the program and I have followed this aircraft type ever since. Based on the video alone, I have correctly called the reason for a lost F-18 on multiple occasions, including the Blue Angle #6 that went down in Beaufort(my old home)...

I would hardly call that backround as not knowing squat, but nice try.

The best vantage point for watching an airshow is...... Many miles away, in your favorite seat, in front of your TV!;) Way too many spectators have been fried by av fuel during "mishaps"!!

That's Canada eh! Haven't you heard of the Snowbirds?

That said, Lethbridge is more Texas than Texas. Walk into a bar in Lethbridge and you see most guys wear a cowboy hat.

Is it me or did it seem like the pilot ejected a little late? Wow, glad he made it out though. I caught this story in the morning military news paper this morning.

    If I were to guess:
    1) The pilot was trying up to the last possible moment to see if he could recover
    2) The pilot was trying to fly the plane to go down in a safe area and not crash into the crowd.

That had to scare the poop out of a few people. That camera guy wasn't all that far away IMO.

The Pilot definitely looked like he was trying to save it. Is it me or does the engine sound like it gives up the ghost just before he ejected? Or maybe that was him ejecting. Hard to tell.

Glad he is alright and nobody was hurt.

He flattened out to a point where he couldn't recover. I'm sure he was showing the near-stall capability of the aircraft, except it appears he took it a little too far. I didn't hear or see any signs of an engine failure...

Snowbirds are residents of the northern states of the US, that spend their winters south of the Mason-Dixon line.:D
