    Default Amp covers

So I love my amps, but the 845 tubes are extremely bright. This is not a pleasing thing when watching a movie, so I decided to make some custom covers for them. Pictured below are the skeletons so far. The wife is figuring out the best way to get the fabric on. Final product should be done by the end of the night.

This sounds like a very bad idea.

    Why? Heat? Already considered.

The fabric will clear by roughly 6". The only tube that puts out any heat is the 845, and that is small by tube standards. You can't feel the heat radiating until you're within an inch. The fabric used breathes tremendously, one of many reasons why I chose it. While I appreciate the concern, this is not a spur of the moment decision. Much thought went into this. If these were heat plants in any way, like the jolida, it wouldn't be happening.

Keep in mind that these are only in place for the occasional movie, not long term listening sessions.

Skip why not a solid piece of woods for the top with some slots for ventilation.

If you look around, you'll see that just about every tube amp that has a cover is made of some sort of metal grating.

Three reasons - weight, cost, and the still present light washing out my pj screen. This option allows the wood to be hidden and keeps it light enough that the wife can move them around.

    I never knew that....

Really, this is no more of a hazard than an equipment rack with fabric on the front. Feel free to continue to throw me under the bus, but the project will continue and be put into use. There will be constant monitoring the first few usages to ensure safety, and if there are issues, I promise I'll report it and bow down to you.

Honestly, a nice opaque black grill cloth would probably muffle the light nicely, and I'm sure you could get away with a couple of layers if need be and still get good ventilation.

Fabric is on, and yes, it is akin to grille cloth. Excuse the picture quality of the iPad. First movie will likely be tomorrow, but I might listen some tonight.

Looks sharp, cheap fix and six inches clearance should be lots.

That's fine Jesse. The fabric has a melting point of almost 200 degrees Celsius. If the amps get that hot, I think I've got bigger issues to worry about than the fabric. I've been listening for the last hour and monitoring just in case with no issues. I might add a small sheet of material directly above the 845 to diffuse the heat a bit and block a bit more light, but everything is fine and temps around the amp are still normal.

Damn, that's just shy of 400F. Is that stuff made out of Kevlar?

Polyester, found at any local fabric store.. It was stretched to maximize air flow. My main concern was keeping the amps from overheating but no issues there.

Technically it's 295 degrees Celsius. Finally found the proper number, but knew it was well above necessary requirements.
