The surround will gain a bit more compliance over time, but running it hard out of the box won't hurt it as long as you don't bottom it out or clip the amp.

it might also depend on the sub. my old velo sucked when i first got it hime but afetr a few weeks it realey opened up and started to hit. but my new sub with the av15 drivers i have seen very little change.
