H9: If you don't trust what you are hearing, then maybe you need to be less invested in a hobby which all the pleasure comes from listening to music.
Aside from Arcade Fire, lately I've been re-exploring the 80s, the most maligned decade for music by far thanks in part to some really bad new bands (e.g. hair metal) and 1970s musical outfits that tried to adjust but failed miserably, spoiling the decade's reputation for the really innovative artists. A transition time for sure, but many of these acts have held up remarkably well.
Many of these are re-purchases.
First up a purchase of the 2008 Japanese Mini LP remaster of The Smiths classic, Louder than Bombs. Much superior sound when compared to my original Sire pressing.
I've also picked up two classics (Express and Seventh Dream of the Teenage Heaven) by the criminally underrated Love & Rockets. Each of these are remasters (2002) done right, with the original U.K. tracklisting plus a bunch of bonus tracks, including a cover of Pink Floyd's 'Lucifer Sam' which is great. Much better sound than my original Beggars Banquet versions.
Recently I also bought an Echo & the Bunnymen compilation called Ballyhoo. This replaces another classic comp from the 80s called Songs to Learn and Sing. Ballyhoo was released in the mid 1990s...again, the sound is much better than on the otherwise flawless Songs to Learn and Sing.
Next up is Sting's live album, Bring on the Night, that featured his then-new band of extremely talented jazz musicians that was assembled after he disbanded The Police. Sitting at the top of the pop-rock world with The Police in 1983 he had everything to lose from striking out on his own, but his audacity paid off in spades. I was inspired to pick this up after watching the excellent documentary by the same name recently. The documentary illustrates how this guy epitomizes and personifies the term musician, even if he comes off a bit stiff.
Finally, the latest release from Arcade Fire: The Suburbs. A bit plaintive, but anchored by more emotional weight and depth than their previous two efforts, this one takes a little time to fully appreciate but its gonna be a classic I feel.

Stephen Egerton was the guitarist of one of the most influential pop/punk bands, Descendents. Though Descendents are no longer together, Egerton has assembled an assortment of talented singers from other bands to handle vocals on his solo debut. The list includes: John Speck of The Fags, Jon Snodgrass of Armchair Martian, John Moreland of The Black Gold Band, Tim McIlrath of Rise Against, Chad Price and Scott Reynolds of ALL, Jesse Cole of In Stereo/Le Fang, Dan Adriano of Alkaline Trio, Milo Aukerman of Descendents, Mike Herrera of MxPx, Joey Cape of Lagwagon/Me First And The Gimme Gimmes, Frank Daly of Big Drill Car, Mark Vecchiarelli of Shades Apart, and Abe Brenna of My Name/Wretch Like Me.
If you were ever a fan of Descendents, ALL, Black Flag, etc., you owe it to yourself to check this album out.
