    Default Phono Preamp problem

I'm having issues with my phono preamp in my Pioneer SX1010 receiver. There are 2 phono inputs. One channel isn't working on both inputs when in stereo mode. When I push in the mono button, both speakers produce sound.

Could I purchase a seperate preamp and mate it to the receiver or would I have to fix the preamp in the Pioneer?

Also, any suggestions for a good phono preamp under $100.00, if I can go that route, are appreciated.

    Welcome to CP !

If the unit is still under wareenety then get it fixed other wise I would go with an external phono preamp and use an input on receiver, not phono input on receiver.

Look for a used Cambridge Audio 640P or Parasound Phono Z in that price range.

Not any of the CA 640Ps on audiogon right now but a new 540P for $100

Here is a used Parasound on Audiogon

i doubt a 30 yr old receiver is still under warranty :p

get yerself a stand alone phono pre amp. they start pretty reasonable, and like everything audio related, the sky's the limit on how high you can go. ;)

If one channel doesn't work in stereo mode with either one of phono inputs, it's pretty certain that channel needs fixing. You got sound on both speakers in mono mode coz mono mode sums up both inputs and bypass one channel and sends out signal to output of both channels. I am not very familiar with that SX1010 receiver model but if you ask how to fix it in AudioKarma vintage or Pioneer forum, they have pioneer guys who may be able to fix the problem. We have FTGV here who knows this stuff if you have Service Manual handy. He helps out a lot of polkies who needs Tech advise so you may want to PM him.

You can fix your receiver or simply get a dedicated phono amp and connect it to line inputs (aux or any free line in) of your receiver. But phono amps may be more expensive than the receiver itself so getting another receiver or fixing the SX1010 seems a more viable solution.

Edit : thsmith beats me to it. :)

    Thanks all for the advice.

This thing will have to blow up before I get rid of it. I can't describe how good this receiver sounds. I am going to get an external preamp and then refurb the whole unit when I can convince the wife and save the cash.

Try using some Caig's DeOxit on the switches and pots. The one channel may not be connecting due to dirt. When you mono, the other channel is playing.

I cleaned the switches and pots a while ago, but I'm going to do them again. I'm going to clean the phono inputs in the back first because they have never been cleaned by me. I'll do that tonight when I get home. I'll let you all know the results.

I've had the receiver for a year and have had no issues with it that I didn't already know about before I got it. Nothing major sonically, just a few cosmetic. I never tried the phono inputs because I was only playing cd's until, because of this forum,
I decided to try vinyl again

Now I'm hooked. I found a working, with good cartridge, Technics SL1300, for the price of a half way decent lunch a couple of months ago ( not bragging, just for reference purposes $10.00). Oh yeah, I bought 2 more turntables after that. A Dual 1249 with Shure V15 lll and a Technics SL D2 with a AT. I'M HOOKED

What really convinced me that lp's were the medium for hi fidelity though, was the first Boston album that I purchased off ebay in mint condition and played through my Polk 10A's and the Pioneer. Wow!

After I got the speakers I did a Google search to find out if I had a find. Of course the Polk forum was one of the links. I have been on this site reading about Polk and more since I purchased the 10's. I knew Polk made good speakers, that's why I grabbed them, but I didn't know how good until the 10 A's. Thank you Mr. Polk!
